I am pretty sure he's standing behind the fire, but I guess I wouldn't bet on it.

They didn't invent perspective drawing until later.

They lived in 2D akin to how people lived in black and white for several decades last century. Considering all the funky colors of yesteryear, I think the black and white period was a step backwards.
