Context for the foreigners. A man was sleeping in that cabin when the boat drove up on shore. He only woke up after his neighbor came to check on him.
More context;
They live in earthquake area, there was a small one there 180 years ago, they're used to the ground rumbling beneath their legs. Or beds.
One guy didn't awake and notice a boulder rolling down one of the hills, ground shaking his entire house. Hit his bedroom straight on and killed him instantly, didn't wake him up at all. That's how hardy they are.
