Context for the foreigners. A man was sleeping in that cabin when the boat drove up on shore. He only woke up after his neighbor came to check on him.
The neighbour delivered a stern message that his shopoholism is going overboard.
Clearly this is a bow message.
I am not sure if the answer to how he remained asleep will be the most deep natural sleep or involving a big amount of alcohol.
More context;
They live in earthquake area, there was a small one there 180 years ago, they're used to the ground rumbling beneath their legs. Or beds.
One guy didn't awake and notice a boulder rolling down one of the hills, ground shaking his entire house. Hit his bedroom straight on and killed him instantly, didn't wake him up at all. That's how hardy they are.
