To be fair, the NASA article didn't explain that part much, either. I guess what's happening is the smooth bottom side of the plane keeps the sonic boom that's directed at the ground mild, while the more aggressive version of the sonic boom that we're more accustomed to is directed upwards? I'm inferring here, of course.
