The New South Wales government is proposing to allow aerial shooting to control feral horses in the Kosciuszko National Park, as it tries to deal with their impact on the local ecosystems.

There are between 14,500 and 23,500 horses estimated across the park, with the government legally required to reduce the population to 3,000 in a third of the park by mid-2027.

Environment Minister Penny Sharpe said that won't be achieved under the current Kosciuszko National Park Wild Horse Heritage Management Plan, using measures including trapping, rehoming and ground shooting.

"Over recent years, the numbers of horses in the park at Kosciuszko have become unsustainable in relation to the rest of the balance of the ecosystems," Ms Sharpe said.

The proposed amendment has been backed by the Invasive Species Council, which has been calling for aerial culling to be reconsidered after a survey earlier this year found wild horse numbers in Kosciuszko had jumped by more than 30 per cent.

Anyone tried horse? Is it good meat? I'm not being facetious - wondering if there's any upside for what sounds like the necessary cull of a whole bunch of animals. Or would they be too parasite ridden etc?
