I’m not understanding your logic. I’m not disagreeing with your premise that there are more important issues but are you suggesting he shut up simply because you happen to dislike him and there are worse things going on?

I'm suggesting that anyone who is on the non-fascist side of what's going on in this country, who is framing the drop in tourism as because Trump has impacted "the economy" as opposed to because he is snatching tourists and putting them in turbo-jail for literally no reason and all and it's scaring the shit out of people who might otherwise want to visit our previously safe country, when other people already inside the country don't have that option and are keeping their kids home from school worried they might get snatched too or something, is normalizing some really dangerous shit.

If he wants to talk about California's economy, then maybe I would argue that his priorities are off, but fine. But the way he framed it to me crosses the line over into active normalization and complacency, not just failure to grasp and emphasize the right point.

I didn’t interpret it that way:

California Governor Gavin Newsom has warned that federal policies under President Donald Trump are threatening the state's tourism economy

“We also recognize that our state's progress is threatened by the economic impacts of this federal administration”

To me it reads like he also recognizes economic impacts, not that he’s only recognizing economic impacts.

"The Golden State and Canada have always had so much in common," Newsom said in a video posted on X, formerly Twitter. "Sure, you-know-who is trying to stir things up back in D.C., but don't let that ruin your beach plans."

"Sure, you might get thrown into an immigration jail with no blanket, toilet paper, or heat. Or medical care, or any kind of transparency about when if ever you might get out. But don't let that ruin your beach plans. Come anyway. Don't call me if something happens to you."

Looking more at the story, I think Newsweek just shouldn't be allowed as a source here. They have basically become tabloid trash, and I think the entire point of this story is to normalize the stuff Trump is doing and make it sound like business as usual, as well as to make Gavin Newsom sound kind of goofy and selfish and put up a slightly unflattering picture of him.

There are other politicians who are doing sit-ins, leading protests, going to El Salvador to try to rescue our people from what Trump is doing to them. More appropriate responses. I'm not saying Gavin Newsom is not doing anything like that just because this story doesn't mention it and emphasizes some trivial stuff, but bottom line, I don't like the story. Maybe assigning some blame to Newsweek instead of Newsom is a better way to look at it, though.

What are you on about? He’s the governor of California. How are tourism numbers of California not in his purview? All he said was the current administration is affecting California. It’s not that deep.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat 2 points 3 months ago

Absolutely it is that deep. People are getting snatched, judges and 100% innocent tourists among them. Anyone in government who is pretending it is a normal time, talking about tourism and come see our beaches, is helping lay groundwork for letting it continue and escalate.
