So Allan Turring was gay? But saved pretty much the whole world by breaking the enigma machine? So after everything is said and done he goes back home and they nail him with an indecency ticket whate? (lemmy.world)

whatever. Even though we people who were from other countries would have thrown parades for them if they were straight or closeted? Am I kind of missing how many lives he saved part? Did he not get any recognition coming home?

He didn’t come home per se because his work was performed in the UK. On top of that, much of his work was classified until after his death, so his contemporaries didn’t really know of his contributions. I also don’t agree with the idea that other places would have been ok with his sexuality as homosexuality was not accepted in most places during the 40’s and 50’s. The Lavender Scare of the period comes to mind.
