Don't let what's left of journalism die. Help it fight for every breath it takes. Anyone can see how powerful the media conglomerates are, and the sometimes subtle power they wield to shape what passes for reality is so dangerous. We will not survive the coming future without independent journalism.
Agreed. Media concentration is a serious threat to our democracy, much like how FPTP concentrates political power in fewer hands.
This parallels Duverger's Law - how winner-take-all systems inevitably trend toward two-party dominance. Canada's effective number of parties is already down to 2.76 and shrinking. Similarly, our media landscape keeps consolidating into fewer corporate voices.
Just as proportional representation ensures diverse voices are represented in government, we need policies that protect media diversity and independent journalism. When a few conglomerates control most information channels, it's as democratically problematic as when millions of votes don't count in our elections.
The health of our democracy depends on both electoral reform and maintaining strong, independent journalism - they're two sides of the same democratic coin.
