I unfortunately know too many people of this type who definitely should have known better.

My rough sketch hypothesis is that they have some kind of dark triad disorder going on. Then they get taught the scientific method which makes them capable of looking at themselves for the first time in their lives and lets them see how horribly horrible they are. So this just drives them insane.
