I'm so tempted to try it out, but I just really don't like downloading a "random" APK without at least knowing if there's a way to verify there's nothing malicious in the app.

Chinese or otherwise, it's all the same. Took me forever to trust the newpipe download... I'm just too cautious I guess.

it’s available on Apple’s Store and Google Play at least in my region. So it’s subject to the same restrictions and oversight every other app available through those platforms is, at least.

I’m not sure of the proportion, but malware incidents are much rarer on the App Store compared to Google Play.
