I don't know why people bother to buy foldable phones, if you want bigger screen just buy tablet....smh...
Tablet has bigger screen plus it's cheaper than buying foldable phones

[–] not_woody_shaw@lemmy.world 28 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Tablet doesn't fit in my pocket.

Time to bring the JNCO's back

[–] don@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I absolutely miss the unlimited fuck outta those very useful pockets, goddamn those jeans were just too good for the market. Fuck, my shorts had deepass pockets with a smaller little pocket on the outside for shit like your wallet or w/e

og jncos were just too good for us fuck 😭

I have a foldy phone, I'm never going back.

if you want bigger screen just buy tablet....smh

I did, multiple times, sooo many times in all manner of price points, sizes, brands and even OSs (I've got fucking Windows tablets WITH cellular FFS just chilling in archive). Do you know what happened to them? They started collecting dust within a couple weeks

I don't want to carry multiple devices, even when I do want to I can never get the habit to stick, so I never have the tablet when I need it the most

My foldy phone solves that issue immediately, it's a phone when I need a phone and a tablet when I need a tablet.

I'm just curious

Does the screen vertical folding bulge area (idk if it has its own name) somehow get in the way during day-by-day usage?

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 8 points 7 months ago

Do you mean the crease? Nah, I hardly notice it, I used to feel it when sliding my finger across one side to the next like to drag and drop things, but after awhile I stopped noticing that to

[–] VolumetricShitCompressor@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Do you have one of those who fold along the longer side or the shorter one?

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago

I have the book-style pixel 9 pro fold.

The clam-shell style is truly a gimmicky nostalgia-grab IMO

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I tried a pixel 9 fold for a little while, it was neat but way overpriced for the novelty, and there are no cases worth a damn that aren't attached entirely by glue strips. Returned it and got a pixel 9 XL instead.

If they can make one with the same width/height as the XL (big hands, too many typos on the small screen keyboard), for under 1500, id probably go for it

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

That's mine right now lol, I also had the OG Pixel Fold. I don't find it to be a novelty for me. Def a bit on the expensive side, but since I buy my phones through the carrier on EIP anyways it's meh.

I use the Poetic Spartan case and it's solid, it has the adhesive strips, but I don't use them (I just took em off) though it adds some heft, it's worth it considering the amount of drops my phone has taken its protected against lol

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 7 months ago

I had one of the Ghostek ones. I went through Best Buy (unlocked, to try Grapheneos; which handled switching screens much better than i expected) due to good return policy and no restock fees in Ohio.

Why have a phone with a screen? Just use your computer if you need it, smh 🤦

Why have a phone at all? Just ask a friend to use theirs if you need it 🤷‍♂️ or maybe write a fucking letter for once? Damn kids...

[–] LouSlash@sh.itjust.works 5 points 7 months ago

Why have a friend at all?

going to my basement

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Why have a computer when you can just use one at the library? smh

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

Why use a computer when you can just wander, naked and fearless, back into the forest from whence we came. Climb a tree. Make a nest of leaves. Screech "Ook Ook!" to let everyone know this is your tree now.

I only contact people via my QRP rig, CW mode. Don't talk to me unless you have a valid HAM licence.

[–] joyjoy@lemm.ee 6 points 7 months ago

Bigger screen and fits in my pocket.

[–] Mr_Dr_Oink@lemmy.world 5 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I guess you have to try one. I got a samsung fold 3, i loved it. Then, when my contract ended, i got a fold 6. I would have a hard time going back to a standard phone tbh.

My wife said she wouldnt get a folding phone but when i got my fold 6 i offered her my fold 3. She ended up really liking it and wants to get a newer fold when her contract ends.

So theres me, who knew i wanted one and am happy with it to the point where i cant go back. And my wife, who didnt want one but after trying one for a few weeks, said she got it now and would be upgrading to a newer fold when the time comes.

They need to get these in peoples hands if they want to sell them better.

[–] kuberoot@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 7 months ago

I don't use a foldable phone... But you can't put a tablet into your pocket. It's meant to be the dimensions of a phone, just much thicker, so it fits into your pocket, while letting you fold it out to have double the screen size. For all the issues they have, that's a very reasonable and somewhat appealing feature.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I have the same question about tablets. A tablet to me is like a laptop without anything good about a laptop.

[–] pumpkinseedoil@mander.xyz 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I exclusively use my tablet for writing (and at uni I almost exclusively write by hand). But for that one thing it's awesome.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

That's cool. I could definitely see having used one for drawing if I'd had one in college, but I'm old so that wasn't a thing yet then.

[–] affiliate@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

tablet screen size is okay, but really the people who want bigger screens should be buying tvs. not to mention they have the advantage of being cheaper than tablets. but even tv screens can only get so big. a really cost effective way to get a big screen would just be to go to a movie theater. that’s like 10 dollars(?) for 2 hours of access to a huge screen.

[–] someacnt@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (1 children)

I have similar question: Why did Samsung bother with developing foldable phones? It isn't selling as well as they thought, after all.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 1 points 7 months ago

It did decently for a while, then better competitors came to the scene that didn't make the asinine decision to make it ridiculously skinny and ol Sammy refuses to change course on that so sales have been falling

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world -2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Word.

Phone for, uh, phone stuff, while I'm out and about. Pixel 4a, $70 on eBay.

PC and TV screen for internet.

Crappy $25 tablet for reading epubs.

Lemmy: NO! I want all my use cases on ONE device that doesn't do any of them well!

OK, pay out the ass for it along with the associated global warming and ecosystem trashing. Oh, and the slave labor that took to produce it.

Lemmy: NO! Not like that!

[–] guy@piefed.social 1 points 7 months ago

Because electronics in general, including TV, PC and regular phones, aren't associated with slave labour lmao
Also, good job on combating climate change and ecosystem trashing by not buying one device, but four of them!

Imagine I want to read an epub or do some gaming, or watch a show while commuting. Do you suggest that I bring all my devices with me on the bus instead of just the foldable phone?
