Pretty sure Russia was the aggressor, so I think you might need to explain to my old ass what you mean by "defending", s'il vous plait

Even pro Ukrainian sources say them being deployed only within Russian borders is technically fine under international law. That doesn't mean that anyone sane is disputing Russia's blame.
