It's from black culture. You tell your friends to stay woke so that when the cops stop them for no good reason, they remember to treat the cop like a wild animal and be careful around them. If you're black and you treat a cop like a human being, you'll get shot. So you gotta stay woke.

It's why the word was co-opted by the Far Right, and popularised as an insult. Otherwise they'd have to say "kind".

It actually comes from African-American culture and has a history that's several decades old.
