My strategy back in the day was for people to market their forums without explaining federation. So just be like "Oh yeah, feddit.uk is like Reddit but is UK-Focused!" They'd log on and be happy with the content, then learn about federation later.
Yes, that's usually a good way to convince people.
Have you tried talking about it on the UK subreddits? How was the reaction?
