I think something like this is inevitable - if not created by man, then nature has a history of evolving to deal with such things. An abundant form of hydrocarbons must be attractive to life, if they can just figure out how to munch on it.
However - it's going to cause a lot of problems to us when in-use plastics start dissolving too.
