My best friend growing up used to sing along with this every time it played. wrong lyric, 'white man had the smoke'. lol. this video says 'schmaltz' which I'd never known. w/e that means.

The line references how white people adopted black culture's blues style into their own style--rock. The whole song is practically a history lesson.
