Somehow I missed what out of this world happened to result in some people stranded in space, and I thought it'd be fun/interesting to see how others describe what led to it.

Capitalism. Boeing went from being an "engineering" company to one driven by business types who slashed everything they could in the name of profits after merging with another company.
