You're likely doing nothing wrong; wealth and merit are just unrelated.
If I had to list core beliefs that separate conservatives from liberals, that right there would be one.
Agreed, although liberals sometimes have a brand of meritocratic belief - it's usually more to do with something like karma rather than faith in "the market" or whatever.
