A small study in the New England Journal of Medicine earlier this year suggested, but did not prove, that patients with evidence of plastics in their arteries were at greater risk of death from heart attacks and strokes.

The significant harms leaded gasoline would cause were known, but proving that leaded gas specifically would cause tons of problems took a long time, and by that point it had polluted the environment and affected millions if not billions of people.
