That was a year before the election. Reagan spent that year deriding Carter for not getting the hostages back from Iran. While Reagan made illegal and secret deals with the Iranians to keep the hostages until after the election.

That later turned into the Iran Contra scandal.

So yeah. Not a good choice of example?

Yeah. That time there was an evil criminal former B-list celebrity working with a hostile foreign government running for President.

That’s fair, but I guess there’s something to the idea that G W Bush was elected for both terms regardless of the Iraq war issues

The iraq war actually made it easier for him to get reelected. Got the entire base in line. Bush demanded they believe Saddam trained AQ as part of their loyalty to the party.
