The weird creep seems to think that she somehow just changed race, like he turned orange after starting to use spray tan.

I disagree in this instance, dude really believes black people should love him. I bet he genuinely thought he was impressing this room full of black journalists. He's got narcissistic personality disorder, only cares about himself, and can't ever admit fault. He probably thinks he did great and anything negative about it will be somebody else's fault.
