As weird as it seems, I've always been grateful for the experience. The knowledge of exactly where food comes from, knowing that it takes a life made me respect what I was eating more, and thus be way less wasteful than I might otherwise be.

It helped that the farmers in my family were always extra careful to make the death as clean and pain free as it gets. It was also always a little strange but comforting to see my uncle that would calmly and cleanly kill a pig for food cry like a baby if one died while giving birth, or to disease.
