I was you for a while but now when I feel myself getting wrapped into something that I know will keep me awake [mostly projects] I had to develop the habit of putting it off until the first thing in the morning. I actually think I end up spinning my wheels much, much less when I attack big problems first thing in the morning.
Early morning projects or gaming time is the best. With a cup of coffee and silence
