I'm trying to do the same, but reversed. I haven't followed an instance yet cause I'm afraid of a torrent of posts. Look at the instruction in the sidebar for foreign subscriptions, and reverse it. Try deleting the leading "!" if search first fails. When you get to the mastodon instance, try following them. Works?
