I don't think it's just China, or if you just scroll the "best selling" list of Amazon literally right now. People will try to exploit damn near anything for some cash it seems.

Well, news sites can't exploit it by selling T-shirts but they can exploit it even better by putting an artificial focus on China for extra political connotations!
