You can sum most of this up as a combination of ignorance, incompetence, and a desire not to upset the public all being the reasons why the professional journalists and the media didn't pursue this story sooner.

—Frankly, I don't think there's a real difference when it comes to applying Hanlon's Corollary/Law to politics. The outcome ends up being the same.
