Why did it tear though? The ground didn’t expand, it just dropped out below it. I would think it would hang like a sheet over a hole.

True! That's kind of strange. I guess it's quite wide so the center was heavy enough to rip it all out? Maybe it was wet or something too.

I don't think it tore, all the lines are straight. Looks like it was just made of separate sheets that weren't connected, so nothing had to tear, the ones above the hole just fell in.
