I remember reading an interview with a random Russian soldier who said that's just how it is in Russia.

Perhaps it's indoctrination ? like the pilgrims at hajj keeling over and dieing from heatstroke, the indoctrination runs as deep with Russians ?

I certinaly have nothing but disdain for my country (Australia) so I don't get the whole nationlism/patriotism ferver in the first place .
