A community dedicated to the universe of Warhammer 40k, a tabletop setting in the far, distant future.

This is a general community for 40k miniatures, art, lore discussion, and gameplay discussion.

Rules

  1. Keep it civil.
  2. No memeposts/shitposts. Memes are great but direct them to grimdank.
  3. Please mark any posts containing realistic nudity or realistic excessive gore/violence as NSFW; this rule mainly applies to cosplay and realistic drawings rather than miniatures. Being that 40k is inherently violent, this is a judgement call, and mods may occasionally request posters add tags.
  4. No contemporary politics, no political debates. This is a space to enjoy the hobby and get away from the doomscrolling.

I got my first 500 points of 40k yesterday (emperor's children) and i've built most of the models but i really got into the hobby for painting. My hands are pretty shaky though which is annoying because i want to use a lot of different colors. Does anyone have any advice for having more stable or relaxed hands?

Many years ago I ran a couple of TTRPG mashups of Warhammer 40k and Dune. The emperor was much the same as 40k, the Sardaukar were marines, the Bene Gesserit were a plot manifested by Tzeentch, the Butlerian Jihad explained the lack of computers, etc., etc. It was - if I do say so myself - pretty awesome.

Now my kids are getting into role-playing and not interested in fantasy so I'm thinking about reviving my old mashup for them.

In the old days I used the 1st ed. Rogue Trader rules which seemed like the beginnings of an awesome TTRPG before Games Workshop committed fully to selling lead, then plastic, figures for skirmish wargames.

Is there a newer version of Warhammer 40k that is still TTRPG focussed, or should I dust off my old, loose-leaf copy of 1st ed. and work from that?

I haven’t been hitting 40k very hard this year, but I wanted to bring at least one new model to the narrative.

Hi everybody :)

I'm not entirely new to wargaming, but I've never played WH40k before. So I have many questions about the game and some tooling around it. I'll start with universal questions in case answers may help some new players too and then I have a couple of questions about the faction I'd like to play. Thank you for reading it and I hope answering some questions :)

  1. After a Combat Patrol "phase" what do I need to have to play a full Warhammer 40k game? Dices and measuring tape are obvious. But do I need to buy a codex? Do I need to buy a datasheet cards?
  2. How to unlock information about datasheets and detachment rules in WH40k official app?
  3. Are there any popular army builder apps or sites? Or we should stick to the official app?
  4. When I need to specify units for Dedicated Transports? Should it be specified on an army roster list or it could be decided before the game? If it is former, how can I select it in the official app army builder?
  5. The same question about attaching Characters to Bodyguard units?

Specific questions about Space Wolves:

  1. New Codex has new Combat Patrol, but I can find this new Combat Patrol as a box to buy neither on the official warhammer.com site, nor on Amazon nor at my local stores. Do I need to buy units separately to play it as a Combat Patrol or it'll come out some time later (when?) or it was already sold out and I missed it completely?
  2. Previous Combat Patrol has Battle Leader Thoryk in it. Can I pick him outside of Combat Patrol? If I can, than who is he: Lieutenant, Wolf Guard Battle Leader or someone else? I can find him neither in Legendary Proxies Table nor in Legends Field Manual.

Very excited. No miniatures, but it has all the deck pieces, doors, and tokens.

Super excited for this Box. Great addition to the Tyranid army I started with Leviathan and the rules for the Raveners look super fun. After painting three hoard teams in a row, I’m looking forward to only having to paint 5 models. 😆

Josh over at the Crown of Command podcast asked me if I had considered doing some ork terrain like the old adobe huts they had in 90s white dwarf and here is my first attempt.

It was printed off on an Ender 3 with no supports and can be downloaded from either of my stores if anyone wants to print one for themselves.

For anyone not familiar, it's basically a free reskin of Excel that runs on Linux. Enjoy!

I'm new to 40K and want to try playing with my group of friends.

From my understanding, 40K is primarily played as a 1v1 or maybe 2v2 game. I was wondering whether there were rules (official or community-made) for running 3- or 4-player free-for-all games.

It seems like it would mostly work within the rules, but I'm not sure how Command Points and the Fight Phase would work with more than 2 players.

My interest in being free-for-all vs two-headed-giant is the element of strategy and politics it brings (like Commander in Magic: the Gathering)

Thoughts are appreciated!

40k noob here, slowly building up to a 1000 point Ork army

So far I have

Ork Combat Patrol
1x Beastboss (80 pts)
2x Beast Snagga boyz (2 x 95 = 190pts)
1x Squighog Boyz (160pts)

1x Trukk (65pts)

1x Killa Kanz (125pts)

1x Stormboyz (65pts)

Which should take me to 685pts

So far I've just kind of been randomly acquiring things based on what looks cool to me in the moment when I see them in a store, which feels like an appropriately orky way to build an army, but I figured I should maybe start applying a little kunnin to my burgeoning WAAAGH

So where would yooz gitz go frum here?

I'm thinking a box or two of gretchin will probably be my next acquisition, which leaves me with 200-some points to fill

EDIT: Based on comments here and a bit of googling, I think I'm looking at getting

2x10 grots
1x Beastboss on squigosaur
1x10 Boyz

Which will get me to 975 points, good enough for me
