Left: X61S with 4GB ram.

Right: T530 with a bunch of upgrades.

Gotta have extra trackpoints on hand at all times just in case.

I just sent my ThinkPad X13 Yoga Gen 2 in for service the other day, it hasn't yet reached the depot but I'm worried after seeing reviews online about Lenovo's customer service. I know people are definitely more likely to write a review if they have a bad experience than a good one.

The repair is just for the TrackPoint, which hasn't been really up to the old ThinkPads I've had (T23, T43, T61, T410, T460) and had recently stopped going to the right entirely. TrackPoints are the only reason I still buy ThinkPads and not something like a framework (and I don't think I can go back to non 2-in-1 laptop after this last one)

I also took the NVMe drive out and swapped it with one that had a fresh install of windows 11 on it so that I could use my data while it was sent in. Will they refuse to work on it if they have a non oem drive inside?

Hey everyone! You may remember me posting about a week ago about my t440p that would hard freeze after a couple minutes. I'm please to report that the problem seems to be resolved! So because this issue seemed to mostly happen while watching videos I suspected there was something wrong with the onboard graphics. Initially I was under the impression that the graphics chip was on the motherboard but then I learned it was built into the CPU itself. So I bought used CPU for $9 shipped on ebay and here I am typing my success story. By the way, this was like the easiest CPU to replace in anything. In the end was it the CPU or the graphics, I don't know. But its working now!

I bought it from eBay. It is the best computer Ive had in a while, even tho is somewhat old. I love it.

I come from 3rd world country (hence small monthly wage), and any pricier battery sold here having the same quality as the 15 USD battery (there are no original or near original battery sold here, and last time I tried to soldered new battery cell, I failed, miserably).

I need advice, because I don't plan buying new laptop, but need to be mobile (move around). X220 still fit my need and and I'm using up to date OS (Fedora 38 XFCE)

Any suggestion is appreciated. Thank you!

snagged one for $60, busted screen AND torn out hinges, guess someone was having a really bad day... honestly, was hoping for just the board to work so I can turn it into a ghetto AiO.

however, everything works - i5-8350u, 8 GB soldered + 1 empty slot, 93÷ battery health, keyboard and touchpad work, unlocked BIOS, super decent condition... I guess I'll restore it instead.

need to get me a cheap nvme and 8 GB expansion. I reserved a panel for monday (found a basic 250-nit model) and then check if I can repair the panel's housing or get a replacement.

edit: guess jerboa ate the bottom part of my post... so I'm looking for an alternative panel, preferably one with 300+ nits and/or 8-bit color (stock ones are 250 nit and 6-bit) specifically ones that can be sourced from junkers (people who disassemble laptops to sell parts); ordering new panels from Ali or wherever is not an option for me.

as to the display housing, I'm not sure this would be solid, even if I could glue this together with epoxy or something similar, it seems superflimsy... anyone been down that road?

edit 2: so, apparently this is a well-known issue with T480s specifically; the T480 have plastic display covers whereas T480s have some carbon mix that is layered and is prone to crack if the hinges are too tight.

in other news, covers from T470s and T490s should fit as well, so I have that to fall back on if my epoxy attempt doesn't succeed.

edit 3: clean and repaste

edit 4: added 8 GB DDR4 3200 (running at 2400) and a 1 TB NVMe. dirt cheap, works fine. only bummer though, the memory runs at single channel. fuck you very much lenovo, this ain't a $200 budget netbook, you couldn't spend the extra 13 cents for this!?

lubed the hinges a bit, don't want to overdo it. going to get the panel mañana and then attempt the epoxy patch job.

edit 5:

epoxy holds, cured in like 10 minutes. with the lubed hinges it feels solid, doesn't look like it's coming off.

the new screen! well, new to me, came off of some unknown donor. was super-scared because of the specs (250 nit, 6-bit) but in use it looks gorgeous, angles are good, colors OK, brightness has a sensible range, no complaints here.

routing them cables, what a chore though... and the antennas on the wifi card, madonn' - took like half an hour.

as to optics - honestly, looks like shit, especially with the lid closed. but this is a temporary arrangement until I can source a display cover for normal money. some local junker is asking $40 for a "slightly" used cover; by his metric I'm slightly not a teenager. even if it's an accurate description, I'm not paying that for a piece of plastic.

the final product! everything works, sleeps/wakes, fan turns on rarely... haven't dicked around with tlp yet, let's see how it works without it. presently runs debian 12, plasma desktop with flatpak apps.

I'd like again to extend my sincere fuck-yous to lenovo for making this gorgeous thing single-channel only. this is why nobody likes you, you hacks!

Hello everyone! So basically the title. I've already replaced the ram and tried running a different OS and still have this issue. The computer passes all of the onboard diagnostics. Just wanted to see if anyone else has encountered anything like this. Thanks!

I have bought an used T470 for Uni and so far it has been the best laptop I have ever had, and when times comes I need an upgade i wonder how much upgradeable a laptop like this can be.

61

The framework laptop promises to be an upgradeable and repairable laptop, not quite the same philosophy that makes thinkpads great, but I wonder if newer thinkpads are good enough to prefer over a framework.

So I ordered a replacement battery from a big eBay seller branded #CameronSino, as I could not find a genuine one anywhere.

But after the laptop is in my bag for some hours, I can turn on the laptop but there is no left capacity reportet. After reinstalling the battery, everything will be fine.

Anybody has an idea which manufacturer to chose? #Lenovo #Thinkpad #P71

This one is perfect for my budget (not counting shipping it to my country)

I wanna really get it but I want some second opinions.

I just wanna write while I put programming sucks on. And play classic Half Life.

I spent way too long to get it working and I was almost ready to give up.

I tried the standalone ISO updater with a LOGO.GIF file. It recognized the image, but after reboot the original Lenovo logo was still there. No error message, no warning, nothing.

Same with the Windows firmware updater.

The one thing that finally worked was a Winflash64.exe incantation found buried somewhere deep in the Lenovo forums 😠

the incantation

Winflash64.exe -patch -logo logo.gif -exit

Posting for information only. This worked for me, but may - and probably will - brick your machine. You have been warned.

I've been trying to test Intel Rapid Start Technology on my X1C9 and see how it compares to os-driven hibernation.

But my firmware doesn't show the option for IRST. I've seen screenshots from other people having this in the Power section.

Is this even a thing on recent ThinkPads? Has anyone been able to enable it?

I have the partition with correct GUID type. I also have OPAL enabled on the drive, but I don't think it should affect this feature... or does it?

Got this T540p for free from work, it came with a dual-core i5-4200M, 8GB of RAM, the awful 1080p TN panel and the GT730M dGPU.

Upgrades: New TrackPad (T450 Synaptics), i7-4700QM, 16 GB DDR3L RAM, AUO B156HAN01.2, and a good clean (yep, that's an upgrade in my books).

The i7 runs quite well in there, I had some doubts about the thermal situation since it's a 47-watt chip in a dGPU model but so far it holds up pretty well with a -70mw undervolt and Arctic MX-4 thermal paste. Idle it gets up to around 45°C, under load I've never seen it get hotter than 75°C. In addition to Throttlestop, I'm using TPFC on the "smart" setting to keep the noisy Toshiba fan from ramping up and down every .2 seconds.

The GT730M isn't good for much these days but it runs older games quite well. All in all, I ended up really liking this ThinkPad. It's very annoying to take apart, though.

I recently bought a cheap crappy Sim card to try and get it to work on a ThinkPad x200. Has anyone here done this successfully before?

I feel like I am just being an idiot. I'm not sure where to go to look for the relevant Sim card information to configure and I'm not even sure if I'm doing anything correctly.

Hi guys! I've seen something similar posted a while back on R***t but figured I'd ask here as well

How do you replace the rubber feet on a T480? There are plenty of sellers that sell what they claim to be feet for the T480 for cheap, but they don't have the depression on their back sides for the plastic protusion on the bottom case to fit into. I know that the "proper" way of replacing the feet is a bottom case replacement, but it seems a bit excessive.

Are there any sellers online that sell feet that fit? Is there a way to reliably create that indentation on non indented feet? Am I out of luck and will I have to replace the whole bottom case just for two rubber feet?

I've been hearing good things about Debian 12 and it was easier than ever to install on this old T61p.

Wanted to give Bookworm a test drive and happy to report it's smooth sailing using Gnome with a few tweaks from System76. Only took 8m 28s to compile pop launcher on the Core 2 Duo.

I recently bought a refurbished x390. Got it and found the battery had one charge cycle on it. i5-8365U, 16GB of RAM, 256GB SSD, 1920x1080 IPS. A very nice machine as a backup to the family travel x1 nano.

Hi, I'm a Reddit refugee, mostly lurker there but one comment I made was useful to a few people so I don't want it lost if/when I delete all my reddit data. I'm really hoping Lemmy gets a lot more active users and more content so I'm trying to do my (small) part:

I found that I need to wait 5-10 minutes after booting for the battery usage to drop to 4W. That might just be because of all the stuff I have running such as zfs - that's another reason I originally thought 6-7W was the best I could do.

The key parts from my notes for the gpu:

  • Set Prime Nvidia profile to intel gpu.

  • Modify /etc/default/grub to have

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi="!Linux-Lenovo-NV-HDMI-Audio""

  • update-grub2 and obviously reboot

The kernel option I found whilst researching what was stopping the gpu from going into power saving mode. I don't have the link where I got it from right now. I had tried blacklisting the kernel modules for it but this made the power usage worse. It needs to be running, with intel gpu selected and the kernel option above.

BTW 3-4W is with screen brightness down (one up from darkest).

I'm in love with this big guy :)

And here are the upgraded components:

  • 1080P IPS Screen
  • 512GB SSD
  • DVD caddy replaced by a HDD caddy (intalled an additional 512GB SSD)
  • Processor upgraded to an i7-4712MQ
  • Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste upgrade
  • US keyboard replaced by another one with Spanish layout (original, found on eBay)
  • RAM upgraded to 12GB (enough for me)
  • Brand-new original 9-cell battery (also found on eBay)

I don't think I forget anything... well maybe the best upgrade: I use Arch, btw!
