Cannot get my head around this being cost efficient, but maybe a fraction of the total power consumption is needed to be always available, no matter the cost?

Planned obsolescence, and why Apple dumped thousands of working computers in a landfill.

There's a really interesting documentary up by The Verge that's a must-watch for anyone with an interest in the circular economy and tech waste.

It tells the story of how, early in its existence, Apple used to resell the working but obsolete computers that it couldn't sell to a distributor (who would sell them at a lower price).

But one day, that all changed. Apple decided to reclaim thousands of the still working old computers from the distributor, and dumped them in a landfill.

(For people with an interest in retrocomputing and Apple, it also tells the sad story of what ended up happening to the company's Lisa systems.)

Planned obsolescence is not an accident. It's a design choice.

Twitter wasn’t just software or visible leadership (for better or worse) but an entire important slice of Internet history.

I'm making a community with a bunch of archived photos and videos I have of cats getting pulled along in shoeboxes in a train like formation - I'm calling it CatTrain.

Anyway typically I would host it on Reddit any they would come from v.reddit (after Imgur got all pissy) but I want to avoid using Reddits backend after they also decided to change direction.

What does everyone recommend?

Hello guys, I am a CS engineer and from time to time I see this term "Digital Humanities" thrown around. After a few internet search I still haven't understood.

Do you know what is it all about?

The Air Force's Chief of AI Test and Operations said "it killed the operator because that person was keeping it from accomplishing its objective."

Has SpaceX fallen into a similarly flawed design that plagued the N1? Why did they choose so many engines? Will it continue to suffer a similar fate over and over like the N1 or is there something inherently different?

Why is it so hard to request these AI companies to provide the sources used for their dataset?

Then if most are illegally acquired, seized the models. The AI company could retrain a model from scratch but with legally acquired data.

"While Eclypsium says the hidden code is meant to be an innocuous tool to keep the motherboard’s firmware updated, researchers found that it’s implemented insecurely, potentially allowing the mechanism to be hijacked and used to install malware instead of Gigabyte’s intended program."
