TL;DW: aluminum foil hidden in protest signs is probably the easiest and stealthiest defense, just be careful where you're potentially reflecting those waves. Soaking rags in water is another option (could throw water on your mask in a pinch) if you didn't expect to face one of these things.

A steel sheet would work even better, but I think that's a bad idea due to the sharp edges plus the extra attention I'm sure that'd instantly draw on anyone holding a big reflective surface at one of these things. Maybe if you can paint it to look like cardboard and curl or round off the edges.

Not sure if these weapons have actually been deployed yet in the US, but they sure have tried.

Tesla is building a humanoid robot to do manual labor and this is up there with his idiotic hyper loop projects in being a perfect example of his insane obsession with form over function because FuUTuRee.

Proposed tasks for the product are ones that are "dangerous, repetitive and boring", such as providing manufacturing assistance.

This week, Mr Musk told investors the humanoid robot's first application would be at a Tesla plant "moving parts around the factory, or something like that". But in the future, he sees it helping solve labour shortages.

Tesla Bot will measure 5'8" (173 cm) tall and weigh 125lbs (57 kg) [...] and have a carrying capacity of 45 lb (20 kg).

Elon thought to himself "wow wouldn't it be like really futuristic if we had humanoid robots working in our factories" and then decided that was a good idea. We have thousands, thousands of machines that can do repetitive, boring tasks like these better than any human ever could. There is literally no practical reason to confine your machine to human form, which is absolutely not optimal for pretty much anything.

2 legs are stupidly impractical, they make you slow and incredibly easy to push over compared to something with 4 legs, let alone something with wheels. Even just walking is a balancing act. 2 legs are the reason this billion-dollar-punchline can only carry a pathetic 20 kilograms.

The only, and I mean the only reason this is done is because it looks futuristic. In practice, it's a massive step backwards and it will make any work place perform worse than without them. Elon doesn't want "machines", those don't look like the future, he needs "robots". Robots which are, in practice, just humans but worse.

I’m about 4 months into a new job and I do everything via laptop. It’s a good sized company, about 400 employees I think. I got a request from IT for a meeting to transition from JAMF to Desktop Central, which is affecting everything. I had no idea about JAMF though, it was never mentioned in my onboarding. Trying to look up info on these two brought me to basically “they can see absolutely everything you do.” But it’s not too clear to me the extent involved here. Any IT folks with knowledge about this? Researching into it, fucking every company with remote employees is getting into this. Feels like a massive surveillance transition unrolling in real time and it seems real bad

Edit - are there any ways I can effectively prevent them from doing this? Dummy activity scripts? VPNs?

Double edit — it is indeed a work laptop issued to me

The reason why NFT artwork is worth millions isn't just for a speculative market so another chump will buy it from you at a higher price, but it also has another value. Like all artwork it is used for tax avoidance. The high price of NFTs allows a wealthy elite to squirrel away millions to accrue value without being taxed. They are more handy than a real piece of artwork or some expensive property in London because a digital image isn't vulnerable to physical damage or maintenance costs. It's obvious why this shit is exploding.

Happens places like Cytube, twitter. I haven't been able to find the problem online because search engines are now trash that only work if you want to buy something.

They're calling it Linux and it's very very unfair. The Democrats refuse to say the words GNU plus Linux! And people are saying that Linux isn’t even a real operating system at all. It’s just another component. And you know what, they're right, folks. There are many many vital system components that go into making an OS big league, you gotta trust me on this. The GNU corelibs? Tremendous. Shell utilities? Outstanding. Many people use GNU every day and they don't even know it. It's sad. And these people are going around calling it “LINUX!” It's a terrible deal.

The media is no good and they'll say "Trump! But don't you use Linux?" And I gotta turn to them and say: look, Linux is the kernel. The kernel is very important and everybody loves the kernel. But guess what? If you have Linux by itself it's garbage, believe me. Linux can only function in the context of a big league operating system. And more and more people are saying that the whole system is nothing more than GNU with Linux added---everyone is saying it. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux. It's one of the worst deals we've ever made.

I used to think that even though Apple's bad, at least they're okay on the privacy front. But what the fuck?

They wanna be able to detect every image I take for the possibility of it being "illegal"? Fuck you.

Is Ubuntu good? And LineageOS for phone?

Edit - At least r/apple seems to be against it If there's one positive thing I can say about reddit, it's that those nerds are usually all in on privacy stuff.

Stremio is a one-stop solution for your video entertainment. It's an app available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.

It instantly plays whatever you want without waiting for it to download.

With Stremio you don't have to worry about all these streaming services or bother going to a torrent site :) You can turn Stremio into a piracy hub with only a couple of clicks.

You must use it with a VPN cuz piracy

Stremio will be connecting to torrent sites like thepiratebay and 1377x and using torrents on these sites.

How to set it up

  • Download it from here and install it.

  • It'll ask you to sign up when you open it. Don't sign up with Facebook. You can also click on Guest Login to use it without an account but you'll lose a couple of features.

  • Now you'll see a puzzle piece, click on it to go to the addons page.

  • From the Community Addons section you will add a couple of addons and that's it! The addons:

    • torrentio Commonly refered to as the best addon for stremio.
    • 123movies 123movies is a streaming site which can be better than torrenting for more obscure movies that don't have many peers.
    • The Pirate Bay catalog Adds a catalog for the pirate bay with extra sort options
    • jackett Lets you add and manage your own set of torrent sites
    • If you want more (there's a lot) check out this list of addons. It's really good. Almost all of them can be added from the addons section in the app.

I've tried to keep the post short so feel free to ask whatever questions you might have

Stremio has a lot more features (recommendations, calendar and notifications for new episodes) that you can discover on your own.

So cancel your subscriptions and donate the money to libre software :sicko-hyper:

Thank you @Windows97 for your help with this post!

:stallman-shining:

Chances are more and more of what you do when you use your computer is done through a browser (keeping in contact with friends, jobs, and even organizing).

So the importance of browsers cannot be understated. And having one piece of software do all of this means you have to be able to trust it.

Which brings us to Google & Chrome. Google Chrome has come to dominate the browser usage share, but even that is an understatement. Every single browser you have heard of, with the exception of Firefox, uses a version of Chrome (Chromium) in the background. Opera, Edge, Brave, you name it, they're all based off of Chrome.

Most people know Google is shitty already; if we're just talking about the web, they are regularly caught sabotaging Firefox to boost Chrome usage and, as any corporation would, continue to strengthen their monopoly by making it harder for alternative browsers to rise up (hence why Firefox is the only alternative right now). This is of course without mentioning the crimes they commit outside the web, e.g. how they help build the US's drones, or how they work closely with the NSA.

It goes without saying then that the authors of this post all urge you to switch from Chrome, or other Chrome-based browsers, to Firefox. This article shows you how quick & easy it is to switch, and transfer all your bookmarks, passwords, and other browser data to Firefox too!

Firefox isn't just the only viable alternative to Chrome, though. It also has a bunch of cool tricks and features up its sleeve.

Extensions

Firefox is very easy to customize to your liking via the settings or extensions, you can have vertical/tree style tabs via one of these extensions, there's also Gesturefy which lets you navigate the browser with mouse gestures.

There's also the Containers feature which "lets you carve out a separate box for each of your online lives", it basically provides you with separate profiles/browsers... and extensions like Facebook Container use it to isolate facebook related tabs and trackers into a facebook container seperate from everything else, or Temporary Containers which provides you with disposable containers, or Google Container among others. There's a lot more but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.

Firefox also comes with built-in tracking protection and anti-fingerprinting features plus tweaks you can apply.

Extensions on Chrome are actually much weaker than on Firefox because of Manifest v3 and other things, check this post for more on this.

If you want more screen spaceTry the Compact mode in Firefox by going to Customize from the main menu and picking Compact from the Density menu at the bottom.

Build Beautiful Firefox Themescheck https://color.firefox.com/

Custom CSS styles that can change the whole look of the browserFirefox also has a thing called userChrome (nothing to do with Chrome) which lets you basically change the whole look of the browser, you can see some examples here. Those are a few examples but if you want more you can check out /r/firefoxcss.

Firefox for Android

Unlike most browsers, Firefox supports extensions on Android so you can use uBlock Origin (adblocker), Dark Reader and other extensions.

It also comes with built-in tracking protection and an option to have the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.

Plus you get syncing between your browsers and firefox has a feature to show tabs from other devices in the customization settings.

You should get Firefox from F-Droid instead of Google Play. It's called Fennec on F-Droid

Firefox for iOS

Firefox ship both the standard browser, as well as Firefox Focus with extra tracking protections (you can use it as a content block in Safari, too).

More detailed technical info about FirefoxFirefox is a unique browser in a lot of ways. Firefox runs on an engine called Gecko, as opposed to Apple's web engine called WebKit or Google's fork of WebKit called Blink.

Firefox was originally a spinoff of mozilla internet suite, which itself was a continuation of the netscape communicator project. Firefox then underwent the quantum update which made it much faster and made it easier to develop for while also dumping the XUL extension system. This means that the Gecko engine is entirely independent from chrome/safari. It is also a lot more tightly integrated into the firefox browser, which is one of the reasons why most browsers are based off of blink/webkit.

There are firefox based browsers though, the most notable of which is the TOR browser, which protects users by routing all traffic through the TOR network and it's also designed to be as difficult to fingerprint as possible.

We hope this post has convinced you to make the switch! Here's the switching guide again, in case you missed the first link. Feel free to ask questions in the comments, or alternatively check out the !libre weekly megathread, which is sticked :)

Check this post out if you want more open source apps on your Android.

This spyware's common name is Windows 10 but people of high culture call it NSAos. This software disguises itself as an operating system but ask yourself this; who is operating who?!!! :think-about-it: Ads, forced updates, bloatware and the fucking data collection!! You aren't in the driver seat, this spyware is doing the driving!

Today is your lucky day though as I come with good news :meow-fiesta: there is a free open-source and privacy respecting operating system called Linux. This Linux thing is the backbone of the whole internet and Android is based on it.

You can do everything on Linux; from using Firefox or Spotify to playing your games... there is even a Linux program called WINE which allows you to run quite a lot of Windows games and programs as if they were native to Linux

With Linux, you are in full control, you doing the driving yourself, comrade!! So come to the penguins' side :penguin-dance: and reject the evil corporation.

I suggest you check out the Linux distribution Kubuntu... Manjaro KDE for those feeling a bit brave.

This post is for you to share your concerns about Linux with us or why you are hesitant. If you are a Linux user then tell us about how lovely it's been.

PS: any negative comments about Linux will result in a ban, the mods are onboard with this :)

Edit: and join us at !libre for everything open source.

Edit: on Linux, you get all your software from one place and you can easily update them from there.

The Ultimate FOSS Guide For Android!

First thing to do is install F-Droid which is an open source alternative to Google Play that only contains FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) apps. This way you can easily update the apps and find new ones... All the Android apps are available on F-Droid unless otherwise stated.

One common feature among the following apps is being privacy-friendly.

This list isn't in anyway exhaustive so feel free to ask for other apps.

If you don't like F-Droid's design then you can use an alternative client like Aurora Droid. Aurora Droid also comes with a lot of repositories that you can easily enable.

Repositories: F-Droid is very strict about the apps that are included in the official repository but there are other repositories you can add to have access to more apps. Izzy's repo is a popular one which you can easily add.

ARM instruction set has not changed very much at all since then and is in many chips in nearly every device. More are made than any other design.

She is also trans and transitioned in 1990s. Being a cis woman in technology can be frustrating even today. She was a trans woman in UK tech in 1990s.

This is a innovator in technology. Not Jobs, not Musk, not Gates. Wilson created the CPU design which is cheap, simple, efficient, strong, and has become universal today.

some article about banned reddit communities, specially r/GenderCritical.

Apart from reviewing the weird shit that terfs post online, I found a reflection on the article about how these communities were more "repressed" on reddit because other subreddits bullied them.

So I kinda miss bullying chuds and terfs, and knowing that this had an impact makes me sad..

Bonus: they only mention chapo when talking about Lemmy, and how its devs refused to help the online terfs. Proud of you @dessalines @nutomic :fidel-salute: and fuck the "free speech" tech bros that helped them.
