Currently, Windows commands 68.15% of the PC market share, MacOS occupies 21.38%, Chrome OS has 4.15%, and Linux is used on 3.08% of PCs. Around 3.24% of all systems run either FreeBSD or an unknown operating system, which are most likely either very new or very old versions of popular OSes.

Based on data from StatCounter, Linux's share doubled from 1.64% in 2018 to around 3% in 2023. On the other hand, MacOS increased its share from 12.33% in 2018 to 21.38% today, whereas the share of Windows dropped from around 82% five years ago to 68.15% today.

Three years after Slack flagged up 'illegal' bundling of chat app. European Union antitrust regulators are expected to next week launch their first formal probe into Microsoft’s integration of collaboration app Teams with its dominant Office 365 productivity software suite.

It is 15 years since Microsoft’s last official engagement with the EU’s competition cops after which the Redmond-based software behemoth was fined €899 million for failing to obey an order that it would play nice with rivals and charge them a reasonable rate for information required for interoperability.

Researchers in Zurich are using drones to collect environmental DNA (eDNA) in a technique combining robotics and genetics that could change our understanding of Earth’s biodiversity.

The technology that the team of Kristy Deiner is testing is designed to accelerate the collection of data on diversity, Deiner says as we step off the platform and into the lush vegetation. Up ahead, a group of students is setting up a portable lab. A few metres away, a pump is sucking water from a pond.

The mini lab enables the sequencing of environmental DNA (eDNA), the genetic material released by every living species in water, the air, the soil, on tree branches and on the screen of the device on which you are reading this article. The analysis of eDNA is a rapidly emerging research method and has opened up possibilities that were unimaginable even just a few years ago. In the past, biologists had to go to the field to list the species present in a given place.

Now, more information can be extracted from a test tube of water or a strip of adhesive brushed through the branches of a tree than from an army of biologists camped out for days in the jungle.

Most intrusions have been innocuous, but a nefarious plot could bring down the grid. Experts have suggestions for improving security.

When British security research firm Pen Test Partners spent 18 months analyzing seven popular EV charger models, it found five had critical flaws. For instance, it identified a software bug in the popular ChargePoint network that hackers could likely exploit to obtain sensitive user information (the team stopped digging before acquiring such data). A charger sold in the UK by Project EV allowed researchers to overwrite its firmware.

On August 1st, 2023, tedd.it will cease its operations and shut down permanently.

With the new restrictions on the Reddit API taking place, tedd.it's access to Reddit and its content has been severely limited, effectively rendering the site unusable for more than a handful of users. This is the cause for the "429 Too Many Requests" errors you see lately.

Sadly, tedd.it is just one more victim in a long list of projects and apps killed by the changes. This is a deliberate decision by Reddit, with the intent of killing content scrapers and third-party apps unless they pay enormous, unrealistic fees, simply because they want to cut costs on their infrastructure to protect their bottom line.

Twitter's cash flow remains negative because of a nearly 50% drop in advertising revenue and a heavy debt load, Elon Musk said on Saturday, falling short of his expectation in March that Twitter could reach cash flow positive by June.

"Need to reach positive cash flow before we have the luxury of anything else," Musk said in a tweet replying to suggestions on recapitalization.

European and Australian police join forces with FBI to seize weapons, drugs and $148m in cash

The FBI set up its own encrypted platform used by hundreds of criminals around the world, in an “unprecedented” sting operation that led to more than 800 arrests in 18 countries, law enforcement officers have said.

The operation by the FBI and Australian and European police, ensnared suspects in Australia, Asia, Europe, South America and the Middle East involved in the narcotics trade.

More than 800 suspected members of organised crime gangs were arrested and $148m in cash seized in raids around the world, along with tonnes of drugs, cryptocurrencies, weapons and luxury cars.

At a press conference in San Diego, the FBI said it was behind An0m, a supposedly secure encrypted messaging app, which was secretly developed and sold to organised crime networks.

As rumors mount for a “Windows 12” release for next year, Microsoft confirmed and named a new Windows 11 23H2 update planned for the fourth quarter of 2023.

Microsoft hasn’t yet revealed what’s in it, but the company does have many unreleased features in the beta testing pipeline that could be included. One of the big new items is Windows Copilot, which takes the GPT generative AI tech being used in Bing and Microsoft (Office) 365 and gives users an OS-wide personal assistant — and is available to test now.

Another feature to look out for is the release of the next File Explorer: it includes tabs, favorites, and a modernized look. Meanwhile, gamers may enjoy native RGB lighting settings coming to Windows 11 to make clunky hardware-specific software unnecessary. Other features in the pipeline include built-in RAR and 7-zip compressed file support and dark mode for Paint.

NASA says its sodium selenium prototype battery has an energy density of 500 watt-hours per kilogram, which is about double that of conventional lithium-ion batteries.

That battery is up to 40% lighter. Their sodium selenium battery cells can be stacked one on top of the other with no casing around them. Eliminating the casing around individual cells means more energy storage within a given amount of space — a huge advantage when trying to fit batteries into the structure of an aircraft. It also means the cooling systems for the cells can be smaller and lighter.

The solid-state sodium selenium batteries from NASA are able to withstand temperatures twice as hot as conventional lithium-ion batteries. In addition, they are less affected by changes in pressure.

Time spent on the app dropped over 50% from 20 minutes to 8 minutes, analysts found.

Sensor Tower Data suggests that on Tuesday and Wednesday, daily active users dropped 20% from Saturday while time spent on the platform fell 50% from 20 minutes to 10 minutes. Similarweb’s data reportedly paints a picture equally as grim as daily active users dropped 25% from a peak on July 7 to Monday, while time spent on the app dropped over 50% from 20 minutes to 8 minutes.

Microsoft (MSFT.O) urged an appeals court in sometimes scathing language on Friday to reject the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) request to pause its $69 billion deal to buy Activision (ATVI.O).

The agency asked the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals late on Thursday to require the companies to delay consummating the transaction while the court considered the FTC's broader appeal.

Microsoft said on Friday the agency had been slow to file in federal court, and thus it was inappropriate to press for a delay so late in the game.

"The Court should not mistake the FTC’s litigation gamesmanship for an emergency meriting this Court’s deviation from the ordinary appellate process," the company wrote.

Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has cut jobs just days after it was hit by a wave of executive exits, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

The layoffs at the world's biggest crypto exchange come at a time when the industry's future in the U.S. market is uncertain, with regulators aggressively clamping down on what they deem are illegal activities.

Last month, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued Binance and its CEO Changpeng Zhao for allegedly operating a "web of deception." Binance has said it would defend itself "vigorously."

Google researchers have discovered that a Zimbra zero-day vulnerability has been exploited in the wild, with users being advised to manually patch their installations.

Exploitation of the zero-day affecting the popular email and collaboration solution was discovered by Clement Lecigne from Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG).

A security update that includes a patch for the vulnerability is expected to be released later this month. In the meantime, users can manually apply mitigations provided by Zimbra.

Developers could use the open-source LLM to build generative AI applications, like ChatGPT, for startups or established businesses.

LLaMA, which stands for Large Language Model Meta AI, was publicly announced in February as a small foundational model, and made available to researchers and academics.

Now, the Financial Times is reporting that Meta is prepared to release the commercial version of the model, which would enable developers and businesses to build applications using the foundational model.

The Swiss data protection commissioner has opened formal proceedings against IT services firm Xplain after hackers gained access to sensitive government data on portals hosted by the private company.

The data watchdog last month launched a probe into the Swiss customs and border security agency and the Federal Police. On Friday, this investigation was widened to include Xplain.

The criminal organisation “Play”, which is linked to Russia, launched a series of ransomware attacks on Swiss media groups and Xplain earlier this year.

This resulted in reams of sensitive data being posted on the DarkNet, including 766 football hooligans whose details were logged on a police database.

University of Copenhagen researchers have invented a “quantum drum” that can measure pressure, a gas leak, heat, magnetism and a host of other things with extreme precision. It can even scan the shape of a single virus. The invention has now been adapted to work at room temperature and may be finding its way into our phones.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission asked a federal court on Thursday to order Microsoft (MSFT.O) to hold off on closing its $69 billion purchase of "Call of Duty" maker Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O).

A federal judge had ruled for Microsoft on Tuesday, saying the agency had failed to show the deal would be illegal under antitrust law. The FTC appealed that loss late on Wednesday, and Microsoft has said it would fight that appeal.
