I was looking at getting some roguelikes / lites (already have ToME, CoQ), unfortunately Cataclysm DDA is not on sale.

Krone Hotel at 90% off looks like a decent choice too. Then there’s Jupiter Hell, which I recently stumbled upon and looks great too.

I’d also like to get some of the FF games, though I’ve played VI, VII, IX and a bit of XII, it would be nice to revisit some of the older ones I haven’t played almost since the PSX era.

Minecraft does not natively support the SteamDeck controller. However, mods are always here to save the day.

I recommend using PrismLauncher to launch the game. It has first class modding support, and is just easier to use with modding than the official launcher.

Steam Button > Power > Switch to Desktop

This will switch you to desktop mode. Once desktop mode has loaded, click the steam deck logo in the bottom left of the screen to open the "start menu".

Steam Button + x to load the keyboard, and search for "Discover", clicking it once it has been found.

In Discover, use the keyboard again to search for "Prism Launcher", and when it has been found, install it. Should take a minute or two.

You should now be able to find Prism Launcher in the "start menu". If you cannot, restart the deck, and re-enter desktop mode afterwards.

Launch Prism Launcher, it should get you to configure language etc first. If it asks you to select a Java version, select "17" (or whatever the highest is).

Click on accounts (1) and manage accounts. It will open the account manager screen. Add a Microsoft account (2) (or Mojang, if you haven't migrated), and follow its sign in steps.

When you have signed in, you can create a new instance. There is a large "Add Instance" button. Click it. It will open the new instance dialog.

Make sure to select Fabric (2). Going with the default (starred) options should be good. Then press OK, which should create the instance for you.

Right click on the new instance you just made, and select "Edit Instance" (1).

Switch to the "Mods" tab, and click "Download Mods" (2).

Under the Modrinth tab, search for "Fabric API" and "Midnight Controls". Select each for download, then click "Review and Confirm", then "OK". It should install the mods for you.

You can now launch the instance. It should launch into the game. All going well, you should now be able to play the game entirely with the controller.

You can change controller settings in game by going:

Options > Controls then clicking the controller icon next to Key Binds.

I’ve been considering purchasing a steam deck. My pc is in my office, which limits interaction with the rest of the family if I want to play anything. I’ve tried playing mobile games, but just can’t get use to the controls. Think it’s worth getting one?

I have been having those crashes on my Steam Deck, and for a moment I though I had a faulty hardware, but contacting Valve for support illuminated me.

This kind of crash / freeze accurres usually after 15 / 30 min of gameplay, but it can also happen right when you start your game. The game freeze; black screen; then the last frame of the game is back, and the audio stills playing.

Since I moved overseas, I am using an adapter + power strip to charge my Steam Deck, and because it was charging correctly, I would have never though of it being a problem.

Anyway, the power strip was faulty, so pluging the charger in the wall fixed all my problems (the adapter is working fine).

So if anyone has this problem:

  • Try and see if your Steam Deck crashes while not charging (battery mode).
  • Try different chargers and power outlets (in my case it was just the power strip, but it could also be other things).
  • Try not use extension cords or power strips

If after this you still have the problem, or if that also happens when you are not charging, than it may be because an hardware issue (perhaps the battery?).

I hope your Steam Decks are working fine, but I figured this could help someone down the line.

I also want to thank Valve's Support, absolutely brilliant. Don't hesitate to contact them for any issue, they are the best.

Take care everybody and have fun!

Is there a way from Steam on my desktop to queue games for install on my Deck the next time I power it on? Something like what Google does with the web version of the play store.

I'm guessing not, at least out of the box, from what I've found searching. But I didn't know if there was a mod/addon/etc... out there that could make it work. (i.e. add games to a collection called "Installed On Deck" and the deck automatically adds them.)

Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to setup a development environment for CH32V004 microcontroller on my steamdeck without touching the readonly space. CNLohr made a really good boilerplate for that, but i was not able to make it work on my deck.

What I'm attempting to set up is having the Deck touchpads have different inputs depending on where I click as shown in this video 60 seconds in with the Steam Controller. So for example ← reload ↑ flash light → pills ↓medkit ㋛ melee when you click but when not clicking the touchpad can provide camera controls. I do this because I don't feel like reaching to XYAB and losing camera controls. Or if I'm doing movement having center click be a crouch, but the outer clicks be dodges.

I use something called modeshifts on the Steam Controller, but the Deck touchpads requires too hard of a press to activate for my liking with no pressure adjustment available for modeshift clicks.

There is touch menus, but when I'm using the pad as a mouse I found clicking to activate the touch menu added a delay I didn't want for actions like melee or reload, or abilities like casting fire. So I settled on Action Layers with the absence of modeshifts.

START OF GUIDE

STEP 1 Apply Action Layer on click

Create an Action Set Layer. In this example I named it dpad click and set it to Apply action layer on click.

If you need help making an Action Layer this person's video is good 60 seconds in.

STEP 2

On the action layer 'dpad click' bind whatever you want to the dpad and the outer ring command (this will be center click)

Set up a release press on a click so the action layer is removed automatically so you return to your default layer.

STEP 3

Invert Outer Ring so that it can function as a center click. Now touchpad click has 5 click functions instead of 1.

You are going to need to play around with the Deadzone and Outer Ring settings to see what you like. But, gist of what it does is

  • Deadzone: (where simultaneous press stops, i do around 26380)

  • Outer Ring : (how big center click is, I do around 32000)

My 10 most played (and enjoyed) games on the Steam Deck over the last year. What are your favorites?

Here’s the list with basic Performance and overall ratings (No particular order):

*Shadow of Mordor - 8.5

Highly recommend. Great Story, Smooth gameplay with a low skill floor and high skill ceiling, and tons of fun to be had with the Orc Nemesis system. I hear great things about the sequel, but I just had to get this off my backlog because it’s been there since launch. Glad I had this gem to kick off my SD journey. It Runs almost flawlessly with good settings.

*No Man’s Sky - 8.75

(if it’s your thing, incredible) For a colorful space-feels survival game, look no further. Relaxing or challenging depending on what you’re looking for, the game setting are yours to command. Superb exploration mechanics and a dev team that only gets better with age. 100% worth the go.

*The Witcher 2 - 8.0

Oldie but a goodie. Runs locked 45 with high graphics start to finish. Or 60 FPS with some dips. Honestly, I just turned the frame counter off and I stopped noticing. Story is awesome, and for a medieval bang-me simulator, no one does it better. The combat and controls take a little getting used to, but there are some great community layouts (including mine). It’s an often overlooked game that is worth your time, and money — especially because it goes on sale all the time.

*The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - 9.999

Needs no introduction. It’s Morrowind — Nuff said. It runs perfectly with maxed out everything. You can even get all your favorite mods going with a little guile and elbow grease. I’d give it 10 but nothing is perfect, and let’s be honest this game has a lot of jank. It’s really just rated highly because of what a perfect fit it is on Deck. Also, it’s one of my favorite games of all time, so I’m biased. Any complaints about the game I’ve long since come to terms with. The animation is whacky and stiff even for the time, and the character models are bizarre and disproportionate. The textures need updating, but with a few mods, this game is gorgeous, and even without it’s still an absolute masterpiece of story music and voice acting. The RPG mechanics are deep and satisfying. Truly, they don’t make games like this anymore. You’re almost meant to be able to break it using the in game systems, turning you eventually into an omnipotent god. What a great game on the go, and it gets bonus points for the nostalgia feels.

*Elden Ring - 9.25

Graphics 10, Story 10, Gameplay and Controls 10, Sound and music 9 (a little crunchy sometimes and needs some balancing between the music and sound effects. It comes with the volume WAY too over cranked so I recommend having a fiddle to get it where you like it) Performance 8 (It’s a newish Next Gen AAA game. It’s a miracle it runs at all. I just lock it at 45 and turn off the frame counter and don’t notice the dips. It’s had substantial updates since the SDs launch that have really optimized the performance, I’ve only recently noticed some hiccups during a cutscene as the camera cut to different angles. Might have something to do with stream loading) Overall 9.25. Worth the time and money, and the performance issues were minor, few and far between.

*Hogwarts Legacy - 9

WHOA. What a game. So surprised by this. Can’t believe it runs on The Deck. Similar score to Elden Ring. I give it maybe a 9 overall, simply because the main story is kinda Meh. However the side quests and NPCs and world building more than makeup for it. Gameplay is phenomenally great. Flying on a broomstick, check, tight combat, check, exploring Hogwarts fully and unhindered, check. They’ve somehow managed to Souls-Like-ify Harry Potter, and I’m not mad at all. Pick it up and live your best Wizard life.

*Kerbal Space Program - 7.75

Get weird and build some rockets bro. Great building, physics and flight sim, with a silly little green men from space twist. Runs perfectly unless you get a little too carried away with parts, but dude… this game can make even modern PCs chug if you get know how. Fun pick up for the Deck, though the controls needs a touch of love from the community layouts. Have a look there and you won’t go wrong.

*Mass Effect Trilogy - 8.75

It’s Mass Effect, finally in a full trilogy on steam, and all three games run great on deck. This was BioWare at its best, and if you’re missing out on one or all of these games in the series, it’s worth a go in deck. Graphics are great, sounds and music are amazing, gameplay is a great balance of shooting and magic, with fun exploration and incredible story telling. Romance options are a huge feature— for a Space-Age bang-me simulator, this is your best bet. Go romance a tentacle headed alien and save the universe from the Reapers. THREE TIMES. Overall great value.

*Halo Infinite (multiplayer only) - 8.5

I couldn’t be bothered with the campaign, but this was great for my FPS fix. Gyro controls make quick work of the console plebs, and keep toe to toe with the PC master race. If you like Halo, well… it’s Halo. Go forth and SLAY, Spartan!! Graphics are great, performance is great, sound is meh — but who cares it’s Halo, and controls are muah chef’s kiss.

*PREY - 9.25

Yikes. I had never played this game before. What a mind-fuck. Graphics are a insanely good, sound, music, lighting, all perfect for the story telling which is absolutely king in this. Story is literally out of this world. I can say no more —play it yourself. Controls are great for a Bethesda mini-action-RPG. It’s basically Bioshock… in Space. Great fun. Only draw back is that it’s a bit short in my opinion. Still, it’s perfect on the deck, suspend your game anywhere and pick it up in bits and chunks. Would you kindly give it a go on your Steam Deck?

There it is. My top 10… for now.

Please let me know what your top 5 games are!

PHILOSOPHY

I mostly play easily accessible indie games. The device's main strengths are its low level performance and portability. However, it has some unavoidable weaknesses such as a low-resolution screen, short battery life, and performance with most newer games. I've never been one to complain about 30FPS, but on some games you can tell that they weren't made to be played below 60FPS. Apart from the device's weaknesses, I'm tired of AAA games as they've become repetitive and formulaic. Nowadays, I prefer games with charm, personality, and gameplay that shines without relying on gimmicks, so I have turned more and more to the indie scene for my games. I also don't like supporting companies like EA, Ubisoft, Activision, etc.

I've selected the best games that I've played, that play to the device's strengths while minimizing its weaknesses. The battery lasts a long time, the device doesn't run hot, and you can adjust graphics settings for extended battery life if needed, but all games run at max settings just fine.

GAMES

Vampire Survivor: This game is a classic already. It can be picked up at any time you have 15-30 minutes. Really addictive and I've found myself saying "one more round" plenty of times. This is sadly the only game on this list not on GOG

Furi: In this game every fight is like a boss fight. There is a lot going on and it's one of the heavier games on this list, but performance will not be an issue. It is challenging, but I haven't really felt cheated when I died.

Enter the Gungeon: This is another game that has a lot going on, but does not suffer from performance issues. It runs smoothly and even though runs can get a little long somteimes, there is absolutely no punishment for leaving a run early and tbh, most of my runs end pretty fast lol

Katana Zero: - I have finished this game about 5 times already. It's a pretty short game, but the story is engaging and the gameplay is satisfying and addicting. I have been playing the speedrun mode for a while now.

Darkwood: I played this game in hour+ sessions. I wouldn't necessarily play this game as a pick up and play game since it is a lot more immersive. I think I've only played through 1-2 horror games before this one, but I might play more of them now. It's like when you play a competitive game after not playing it for months; you know what you're supposed to do, but your hands can't keep up.

BONUS

Rayman Origins: I know this game is by Ubisoft, but I bought it a while back and tbh I really enjoyed playing through it. I hadn't played a Rayman game since the PS1 days so this was a pleasant surprise. I thought I would play it for an hour or two until the nostalgia wore off, but I ended up finishing the game and enjoying it. Difficulty was just right for playing through it while listening to a podcast or while in a discord call. I didn't need to download a launcher and I feel like I'm supporting what I want more from the company. They have some great IPs and I would hate to see them die.

Extra Information

I have the 256GB model and I have not upgraded the SSD and I do not have plans to upgrade it anytime soon. All of my games fit on the device and I have found it a little fun to pick and choose which games I download on my device. Makes me think a little more before I download a game, instead of having everything available for me at once.

The ratings at ProtonDB are mixed, does anyone here have experience how the game runs on Steam Deck?

This game is the reason why a guy [the legendary u/-YoRHa2B-] started working on dxvk, to make this game compatible on linux after it released. Valve hired him and made Proton out of it. The result is the Steam Deck, this remains one of the best games for the SD.

Just curious how Diablo 4 / battle.net performs after installation on the Steam Deck. Do I have to fiddle with settings after every update or once I go through the setup steps am I good to go?

This is the receiver I have: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00ZB7W4QU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And this is the controller I have: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08DF26MXW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If I try to connect the controller using bluetooth my deck can see the controller but can't establish a connection. Is there an addon I can install so that I can use the usb receiver I currently have?

Looking for a decent simple multiplayer FPS. I was having fun with Black Ops 2 via Plutonium, but got banned due to every Steam Deck having the same HWID :(

Looking for something where I can just pick it up for 30-60 minutes and run around and shoot people. Don't want a ton of complicated mechanics, p2w, seasons passes, loot boxes or a requirement to dedicate half my life to the game. Does this exist?

1472

(I am recreating this post from Reddit here as well in case anyone has any insight or if I solve the issue, so I can add my solution to the non-Reddit body of troubleshooting knowledge)

I am quite a happy Deck owner and have had no problems that I couldn't tackle with a bit of Linux knowhow and willingness to do a google search.

But... I am trying something new. I have the official dock and have used it for months to play games directly off the Deck just fine. I have also used the deck to stream games off my PC running Linux Mint (Cyberpunk worked nicely). What I am trying now is to stream a game from the Mint PC to the Deck while the Deck is docked to the official dock.

I dock the Deck (wired to the network), and it can see the PC (also wired). I can click to stream the game as normal and it even starts the game on the remote PC. But that is where it fails. It sits on the loading screen for a moment, and then aborts back to the Deck library. I have the option to "connect" to the now running game, but it only pulls up the generic loading screen again for a few moments before dumping back to the game page in my library.

Games I have tried: Cyberpunk, Outer Wilds, Fallout 4. All of these run just fine when streaming direct to the Deck, but fail when trying to do it docked to a TV.

Any ideas?

The Steam Deck ran it surprisingly well, to be honest. I used the settings off this page and it ran at a pretty solid ~40 FPS.

Not my favorite game, but it was pretty and fun to jump around hacking people as I hacked at people (with a katana). Story was ok, and the ending was just a bit meh for me, but worth it in my eyes.

Next I'm on to playing Outer Wilds docked to the TV with my partner. I'm a few cycles into it and am hooked. The Steam Deck was an excellent buy!

Played it through on the SD when it released last year, took me 32 hours. Now I'm 8 hours into my second run and it's as fun as the first time. Perfect Steam Deck game.

I'm keen to play a football game, e.g. FIFA.

FIFA 23 uses EA Play and thus doesn't work on Steam Deck (?). Older copies of FIFA are not sold anymore.

Does anyone play football games on Steam Deck that they could recommend?
