Just curious what do people have in mind, when they say a game is "working great" or "perfectly". I believe I'm in the minority, but I just can't enjoy a game under 45 FPS, or if the resolution has to be under 720p and the UI/text is all blurry because of it. Perhaps it's because I'm used to playing mainly on PC. Still enjoy my Steam Deck a lot though, even if it can't keep up sometimes.

Since I got the deck the left thumbstick always felt a little funny - almost "static"? Right stick is a bit better but similar. It's very unlike other controllers like ps5 and Xbox gamepad. It doesn't have any functional implication at all - just sensual.

Anyone have similar experience? I'm thinking of getting a stick cap but I don't know if it'd work since sticks are capacitive.

I've done a ton of testing trying to find PS2 , GameCube and PS3 era sports games. Most of the PS2 and GameCube stuff works just fine but I wanted to pass on what I've seen on PS3 and Switch. All of these games work perfect (IMO) right out of the box and no tinkering is required to get great video and audio. Feel free to add your own personal perfect "no tinker" games in the comments below. I'd love to see more sports games suggested, I'm especially missing a good baseball and American football game 😄

PS3:

  • The Bigs 2
  • College Hoops 2K8
  • NBA 2K9
  • NBA Jam
  • Skate.
  • Tekken 6
  • Virtua Tennis 4
  • Fifa 08
  • PES 08

Switch:

  • Layton's Mystery Journey
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Metroid Dread
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Super Mario 3D + Bowser's Fury
  • Tony Hawk 1+2
  • Hades
  • Rayman Legends

PS2:

  • ESPN 2k5
  • Fight Night Round 3
  • God of War II
  • NCAA Football 06
  • Tiger Woods 2005
  • NHL 2002

GameCube:

  • NBA Street 2
  • NFL Street
  • SSX3
  • Super Mario Strikers

I originally posted this guide on reddit, but wanted to repost it here as part of migrating away. Some games, including Halo MCC Coop and Company of Heros 3, will desync during multiplayer. This can be fixed by manually syncing two files.

Thanks to this comment by Fractal on ProtonDB for showing me the way.

The issue is non-matching ucrtbase.dll files between the two computers. There are two different copies of the file, both in the system32 and syswow64 folders (note: each copy is unique, you need to copy two separate files with the same name from different folders). It sounds like these files are supposed to be automatically synced for coop, but they aren't (possibly for legal reasons) and it causes problems with desync.

To fix it, you need to take copies of your friend's windows versions of the files, and copy them into the compdata folder for Halo on your deck. After that you should be able to play without desync.

The specific steps to follow are:

  1. On the windows machine, go to: C:\Windows\System32\ucrtbase.dll and copy the file.

  2. Send it to the linux machine. Some software (like Discord) can compress or straight up change the file. I found I could safely send the files through discord if I put them in a .zip file first. If in doubt (or if things don't work) you'll need to verify the checksums (md5/sha256 etc).

  3. On your linux system, replace the symlinked file in your steamapps folder. Once you're in your steamapps folder, the file will be located at: steamapps/compatdata/976730/pfx/drive_c/windows/system32/ucrtbase.dll The location on the steam folder can be different depending on how steam is installed, on steam deck you'll usually find it in the hidden folder .steam/steam inside your home folder. You'll need to enable the option to show hidden folders before it will show up, this option can be found in the menu in the upper right of the file explorer.

  4. Repeat the process, but this time get the file from C:\Windows\SysWOW64\ucrtbase.dll. Once you have it safely on the linux machine, put it in the steamapps folder at steamapps/compatdata/976730/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64/ucrtbase.dll

After this start both games in anti-cheat disabled mode, and coop should now work.

If the linux/steam deck version of the game won't start at all, it means something is wrong with the ucrtbase.dll files. They either got corrupted/changed during transfer, you mixed up which one was from the system32 folder and which was from the syswow64 folder, or you accidentally put the same file in both of those folders.

Either way, I'd recommend checking the checksums of the files on both machines to figure out which (or both) files got messed up in transfer.

Here's a guide on checksums for windows, it will require either 3rd party software or using the windows command line. On linux, KDE has checksums built into the file explorer, just right click on the file and hit properties. On other DE enviroments you can usually just run md5sum <file> or sha256sum <file>

New Steam Deck owner here!

I already have custom artwork set on the non-steam games installed on my PC. When I view my non-steam games via my Steam Deck I do not see the artwork, however the artwork shows up when I use Steam Link via my other devices

I tried downloading Decky and the SteamGridDB plugin to manually set the artwork, but after choosing "Set Artwork" for my remote non-steam games I just get the spinning "D".

Any suggestions on how to make my streamed non-steam games pretty?

I recently started playing Dyson sphere program on my PC again and I get that lovely feeling of being drawn into the game for hours. But since it's a very mouse-centric game, I don't want to play it on a steam deck. And because I sit at a desk all day for work, I'd rather lay down on the couch and use my deck instead.

Are there any games like DSP that work well with a controller? I find that if I use the trackpad too much, my right wrist starts to hurt.

Oh yeah, that’s the stuff! Playing #Jumpman by #Epyx on #Steam!

Don’t bother with the janky PC #DOS version—play the faithful #Commodore64 original. There’s even an official #SteamDeck controller configuration!

Lol I was in a panic as I figured it would just work haha and nope, definitely not haha. But your tips eventually got it to relent and finally pair, I appreciate it so much.

Loving this thing, just getting my ass kicked around Hirata Estate in Sekiro (send tips or advice, I am the WORST Shinobi, this kid I'm supposed to rescue is fucked unless I get better hahaha).

Thanks for being awesome and helping with the quickness yesterday!

Got this from a post on the alien site. From previous discussion on Lemmy it sounded like Linux users had good things to say about this game but were discouraged about the upcoming FaceIt implementation such that they wouldn't be able to join anticheat enabled matches. Those users and Linux gamers on the fence would probably appreciate hearing this news.

With this announcement on the dev team's community Discord, it appears Linux users will NOT lose access to matches with anticheat.

Is there some plugin for Decky or any other way that can automatically convert the currency when viewing the games on the store on steam deck?

Does anybody know how I can activate Maliit (Plasma's default on-screen keyboard) under SteamOS Desktop Mode? I have the impression that all my typos are because Steam's provided keyboard (STEAM+X) is not registering key presses correctly and I want to try an alternative.

/usr/lib/maliit exists but all the usual guides I found don't work...

Hey everyone! I just got a deck and am looking to get a bunch of accessories, the main one being a dock. The Deck really intrigued me as a all-in-one device for both gaming and software development on the go.

Looking at FlatHub, it looks like pretty much all of the software that I use in my workflow is available (Rider, Webstorm, Postman, GitKraken, etc), even some hobby software that I use like PrusaSlicer! Pretty much all of the other command-line tools I would need can be installed with Homebrew as well without worrying about the read-only partition being overwritten.

So the final frontier for me will be the hardware. First and foremost, I'm looking for a good docking station that can support two simultaneous external 1440P displays. I would prefer to be able to use dual DisplayPort connections, but if there's nothing of good quality on the market then I'm fine with using a DP + HDMI setup.

Additionally, I'm also looking to max out the capabilities of the deck with regards to battery life, performance, and storage. What would be really cool would be if there were some kind of Battery + SSD mount that would strap onto the back of the deck.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

A triple-A game I've been eyeing is finally down to a reasonable price on a third party website.

But after seeing how much better Diablo IV performs on my friend's Xbox, I am really disappointed in myself for buying the PC version to play on my Steam Deck. I play mostly docked and connected to a TV, so the visual experience is something I value.

Diablo IV isn't the first game I've regret purchasing on PC instead of Xbox. For older games, the Steam Deck is great; but it seems like modern games I really need to be wary of. You know what they say, fool me once, strike one, fool me twice... strike... three.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, wishing they'd spent the money on another platform? Is there a rule of thumb you follow on what to purchase, where?

Would it be okay to list the specific games I'm wondering about for input? I love my Steam Deck; but I'd rather not feel platform envy again.

Is anyone else's Deck not rumbling much at all? When it comes to things like using the trackpads, the haptics work as expected for me. But in terms of game rumble, it feels like the haptics motors are dying or something. They rumble ever-so-slightly. Nearly imperceptible. For instance, a game like Hades. When using an external controller, every time I attack, I get a healthy controller rumble. But when playing on the Deck itself, I can really only feel it if I have a finger on one of the touchpads (which is directly over the motors). And even then, it is weaker than what I experience when using the trackpad as a mouse in desktop mode or something. I have tried multiple games, and get the same pitiful rumble in each.

What really confuses me is that I just got a new Deck via RMA, and the rumble experience is exactly the same. Any ideas? Anyone else experience the same?

Not sure whats going on, I open the case with the buds in hold down the button and put it in pairing. The Steam Deck sees it but won’t pair with it. Idk what’s going on. I have reset it, disconnected it from the iPhone, idk what else to try. Desktop mode and Game mode won’t pair :-/

I've seen a handful of people's pics where they have the folding bt keyboards. I'd like to have a portable kbd with a trackpad for those infrequent times it'd be useful.

Has anyone had a good experience with one they can recommend?

The trick is to add the following to a game's launch options in Steam:

RADV_PERFTEST=gpl %command%

This totally and completely eliminated shader cache stutter for me in Resident Evil Revelations, with a cleared shader cache. Prior to doing this the game stuttered every time I fired a gun or entered a new area.

The trick does not work on DX12 games.

Not sure if this has been posted previously, but it seems that sometimes games/applications can get muted from desktop mode. I

I launched Persona 5 Royal this morning and was surprised to see the audio not working. After doing many things such as trying different layers of proton, I went into desktop mode and saw that the game had been muted. After un-muting it, it works again. I do play Persona 5 in desktop mode sometimes when I feel like streaming it for some friends to watch. But I'd never run into this muting issue before. I must have pressed something and it made some combination that would mute the 'application.'

Anyhow, everything works fine now. Hope this helps someone.

TLDR; Games might get muted from desktop mode. If audio isn't working in a game you are playing, go into desktop mode and launch the game. Then click on the sound icon and look under applications to see if the game has indeed been muted.

Should I just stick with using Dualsense on my deck or get something like the 8bitdo ultimate/king kong controller?
