I've collected tips from around the internet and rolled them up into a single post

  • 98GB installed but may need 130-140GB during the install.
  • The game initially uses keyboard controls only, you need to enable gamepad support. See the end of this guide.
  • I'm running a locked 40FPS @ 1280x800 on medium settings.

After installing The Elder Scrolls Online through Heroic:

  1. Click the settings menu for The Elder Scrolls Online in Heroic.
  2. Select your preferred Wine-GE Proton version, I'm using 8-10 at the time of writing this and everything works perfectly ingame.
  3. Click "WINETRICKS"
    a. "Select the default wineprefix"
    b. "Install a Windows DLL or component"
    c. Scroll down, select "dotnet48" and click OK to install it. This will take some time, just wait. If any prompts come up, just click OK.
    d. Once it's done, close out of winetricks.
  4. Click the "WINECFG" button next to WINETRICKS.

a. Click Add, select "D:" drive, set the path to "/home/deck/Games/Heroic"
b. Click Apply, then OK.
5. Play!

Post tweaks:
In the game settings,
Settings > Gameplay > Gamepad - Turn ON
Settings > Gameplay > Use Keyboard login - Turn OFF
This enables full gamepad support.

Hey everyone, this is my first post here so I apologize if there’s already a thread on this somewhere, I couldn’t sort out how to search in this community.

I’m looking for people to play games with on the steam deck when time permits. Can anyone recommend a discord server or anything else?

Thanks!

I have some trouble with my ivoler dock I just bought. When I plug, everything work fine, but after a while, all the usb input doesn’t respond anymore ! Does anyone have the same issues ?

I'm looking for recommendations for earbuds that I can use with my Steam Deck, ideally also being fairly useful for general use with an Android phone.

I don't play a lot of rythm games, but it would be ideal if they were relatively low latency (for Bluetooth at least).

I've seen the epos gtw 270s but I'm not keen on the dongle so they'll essentially just be Bluetooth anyway?

The Jabra 7 Elites look to be better overall buds but there are complaints about latency, not sure what it's like with the deck?

Hi guys,

My first post on Lemmy. I recently purchased from Aliexpress a 65W GaN Charger with HDMI+Ethernet+USB included in one single package, here's what I think of it.

First, I bought it because I think it's really handy to only have to pack one single charger instead of charger+dock. I did not have much expectations of it, but it kind of delivered.

HDMI works great, it detects my LG C1 as 1080p@120 inmediatly, if I want 4K i can force 2160p@30 on the Steam Deck Display Configuration.

Ethernet works (?), my Steam Deck is the only device I own that uses this chargers full speed, I speedtested within my own network and with an external network and it managed to achieve 900/900 Mbps which is really decent and way more than what I expected.

Sadly, I also tried this Charger with my Samsung S22 Ultra and Lenovo T490 laptop, and none of these could achieve half of what Steam Deck did. I'm not techy enough to know if there is some kind of difference between USB-C ports in any of those devices. This means I will not be using this GaN Charger as a daily driver for all my devices.

The USB included in the charger was a hit or miss depending on the device you connect. I tested connecting the Ethernet+HDMI+USB Steam Controller Dongle and it passed the test, the same happened with my Logitech Wireless Keyboard Dongle, on the other hand, when I replaced it with the dongle of a Chinese mini Keyboard (Rii i4 Mini) then the charger could not handle both USB and Ethernet at the same time.

The last thing I have to say about this charger is that I really hate the LED light included, it's unnecesary, it's way too bright and it will interfere with your sleep if you keep it plugged at night.

TL;DR: It's a great little $50USD device, it performed better than I expected, but it won't play nice with all my devices.

Hello,

i am used to drice with a steering wheel on my PC. When switching to the Deck, steering with the stick is in the indirect or "mouse mode", you have to steer back manually. Is there any chance to change steering to something direct like: you move the stick, steering turns, you center the stick, steering is centered?

It seems to freeze upon startup after updating it. I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this or having issues ?

Update: it seems to be sorted with the latest update.

Now thats a game i didnt expect to have steam deck support but it does!!

I suck at this game just as much as i used too. But its still so fun.

The interface seems a little difficult to navigate though, like checking status effects while on the move. Maybe just havent learned the shortcuts?

Any tips for smoother steam deck experience?

Solasta: Crown of the Magister has incredible Steam Deck support btw and is currently on a 60% sale. I bought it as I have some flights coming up and wanted to get more familiar with D&D5e before BG3 comes out.

Obviously buying it right now is a bit like "we have Baldur's Gate 3 at home..." but I was pleasantly surprised by how great the Steam Deck support is. It's like they must've tested it on the Steam Deck specifically.

There's a few minor issues with small text, but aside from that it's great.

It's awesome to see games get official controller support for the Steam Deck. Hopefully Baldur's Gate 3 will have as great support as well.

Being able to see exact number of players playing could be an interesting metric Blizz might not be wanting to share when it comes to WoW, wondering if we'll ever see it on Steam.

I saw demos of Steam Input over the tubes and figured out I might be able to put together a mapping that makes Renoise the music tracker somewhat usable. I've had great success. Will be releasing the mapping on Steam as soon as I've seen it through some more iterations.

Hello,

Looking for some help here. Was anyone able to hook up their console to the Studio Display? (Or even a MacBook Pro?)

I know these aren’t made for gaming but that’s what I have.

Thanks!

A while back my son was playing Sea of Thieves quite successfully on the Steam Deck. He was away for a while so I uninstalled it to save some space. Now he's back and wanted to play again so I reinstalled the game. Only now it doesn't ever load to the menu successfully. It starts to load, shows the wheel in the bottom right, shows the Rare and other logos, then goes back to showing the wheel in the bottom right. Only it never gets any further. The wheel is spinning still and the game doesn't appear to have locked up. I've tried different versions of Proton (experimental, GE) but the issue is the same. Anyone else run into this or have any ideas? I have made sure to do basic troubleshooting like restarting and what not. Any help is appreciated!

I've got a substantial library of games on GOG and Epic that I wanted to play on the Steam Deck, and I've used the Heroic Launcher with some success to access a lot of my libraries on those two platforms, but managing the compatibility per game is a bit frustrating and sometimes after an update things break.

Can anyone else share any success or failure stories here? The only other place I've seen this discussion was on Steam itself and I wanted a non-steam take on the practice of running non-steam platform games and what works.

Anybody know of an alarm clock or timer I can put on my Steam Deck? I play during my lunch break and would like to set an alarm when it is time to wrap up and go back to work.

I would also use the alarm function to limit myself to a certain amount of time per session on the weekend.

It took me 4 hours, much of that was slowness at the beginning and meticulous removal of the old adhesive for the screen. The actual screen removal was so much easier than I was afraid of. I followed along with both their text & video guides and it was all pretty straightforward if a little nerve wracking and time consuming. Very happy with it! If anyone has any questions about the process lmk

I have found myself using my Steam Deck for everything. I sit at that old desk and play Counter-Strike when I’ve got time. I use it for paperwork as well.

Truly an amazing machine.

i realize this is sort of an oddball post, but thought I would put it out there to see if anyone has any advice... I posted a couple of weeks ago, requesting advice for a controller... after reading the many responses (thanks to the community!) I went with the cheapo $30 8bitdo wireless option. I finally got my dock for the deck yesterday and hooked it up. I played a little Chained Echo, then decided to try Super Metroid through emudeck. I got it working just fine... except for one big issue.. When you hit start to bring up the map... it brings it up like it should... but when you press start again to go back to the game, it doesnt recognize it. If I go out and check the controller, to make sure the start push is still mapable (to make certain it is still functioning) it recognizes it just fine.. but in the game, it only seems to work once.

Is there something I am overlooking with this? Do any of you guys out there have any advice?

Every time I'm in Desktop Mode this pops up. It seems to be spawned by Steam Proton, though I'm not sure why since it happens even before I launch a game or software. Can't figure out what exact process is running it. Hitting install either fails checksum, or nothing happens after it finishes the download, and then it just pops up again. Any ideas?

Hi everyone, I just installed RDR2 on my Steam Deck and accidentally disabled cloud saves in the Rockstar Launcher.

To enable them again, I guess I'd have to get into the launcher settings, but when I start via Steam it launches straight to the main screen. I tried adding the Rockstar Launcher as non-steam game, but it seems to start in a complete new environment, so the setting doesn't carry over.

Any other tips to enable cloud saves or should I just reinstall? Cheers

I've had a few issues with the discover store only working sporadicly in desktop mode amd when looking it up found ne good solutions that don't require a system restart or work reliably.

The error I had was something along the lines of a lost connection due to a refused TSL-Handshake these are the errors I get trying to refresh the available updates for example:

I press update All and get:

no metadata URIs for vendor-directory

I press it again:

the application [...]/x86_64/stable requires the runtime org.kde.Platform/x86_64/6.4 which was not found

and again:

aborted due to failure (While pulling runtime/org.kde.Platform.Locale/x86_64/6.4 from remote flathub: Peer failed to perform TLS handshake: Error recieving data: Connection reset by peer)

I would love it if anyone can help me with this as I would like to be able to reliably update my packages (and install new ones which often jeilds the same errors)

I have tried installing over the terminal, which results in the same errors. I have tried it on different Networks. I have restartes flatpak-sytem-helper. service as well as wpa_suppclient.service I have tried flatpack repair. Restarts of the whole system work occasionally but not reliably.

Hi Lemmings!

I have my Deck since March 2022. I was one of the fortunate ones to receive it quite soon.

Lately I noticed two things: The right joysticks movement is not as smooth as it was before and sometimes it makes a creaking noise.

The "A" button lost some of its resistance and become super sensitive in some games registering twice per button push. For example in a text heavy game I often skip dialogues because of this.

The device is in a perfect working order, no abuse, no damage, screen protector since day 1, protective skin applied, etc.

My question: Should I contact Valve and ask for a repair..

...or maybe try to get some nice replacement parts and upgrade the buttons and joysticks?

How does the available replacements compare to original parts? Are they an improvement? Or should I go the safe route and let Valve repair it for me?
