I had this on my wish list from ages ago, it's on sale for $3.99 now, which is super cheap but I'm not sure if it will work on the deck, or if the game is even worth my time. I've already got five other games in the pipe, but if this is really excellent and works well on the deck then I might get it. Thanks for any insight

Game Recommendation? (startrek.website)

Edit

Sorry I haven't replied to anyone, life got a little crazy. I did not expect this many replies on lemmy! Thank you everyone, and I will be checking out a bunch of these! Thank you so much. :) I really appreciate it.

So, I hope this allowed, if not, I'll remove.

I have a small problem, y'all. I'm a filthy casual, and don't game often. But right now, due to a lot of very stressful things going on, I'm having trouble sleeping. I'd like a game I can play on the deck for an hour or two at night to get sleepy. Here's where the hard part comes in:

It's gotta be cheap (25 or less)

It needs to be not-stressful to play, as in, it works well on the deck, with no fiddling, because I am a dumb and don't understand things

I don't actually know what kind of game I want. I don't care for FPS games, I don't have the time/patience/money for online multiplayer stuff, and I'm not super in super heavy action games.

I like puzzles, platformers, laid back games. Open world is great. Very small games are fun, but I need something that I can play pretty much every night for a while. I loved portal and the Stanley parable, but I'm burnt out on TSP and I've played both portal games several times. I need something with a little more longevity.

Can anyone help with this not at all reasonable request?

I'm trying to install vortext using steam tinker launch git, I have installed it via protonupQT and selected steam tinker launch as the compability tool, every time I click to install vortex it gets the the point of running the vortex installer and I get an error pop up saying something about it only working correctly on windows 10, and than if I click ignore it says it requires windows 7.

So I recently moved from Stable to Beta to capitalize on Distrobox being added natively to the deck. I used Distrobox a lot late last year, then after I upgraded to a new SSD, went entirely fresh and stayed in Stable channel.

The problem I’m encountering, I can create a container (created 2 Debian containers and a Fedora container), but I can’t enter any of them. I tried removing and creating new ones to no avail. This is the output I get below. Wondering if anyone has encountered this or if it’s just me, or if there are recommendations on how to troubleshoot.

deck@steamdeck ~)$ distrobox enter debian Container debian is not running. Starting container debian run this command to follow along:

podman logs -f debian

[conmon:e] Include journald in compilation path to log to systemd journal Error: unable to start container "0abddd5ce95420fcfa7b670862258704a724fb270c18176d6e3602a2d99018c6": exit status 1

So this is a very niche tool, but I thought I'd post about it in case it has uses elsewhere.

Recently I heard about Moonring, a free RPG based on the Ultima games. It's really fun, and it seemed like a nice fit for the Deck. And for the most part it is - there are plenty of custom control layouts already that work well.

The one thing that annoyed me however is speaking to NPCs. You need to listen out for keywords and then type those in to advance the conversation. The game auto suggests what you may wish to say - for example 'treasure' may be mentioned and when you type 't' it suggests the full word. You then press tab to confirm. So a lot of the time I'd need to type a+tab, b+tab etc. This should work fine in theory but the steam keyboard is extremely temperamental! Bringing it up every time I wanted to quickly type was annoying me...

So I wanted to know if virtual menus could help, and yes!

To set this up, you want to create 8 Action Sets, labelled ABC, DEF and so on (PQRS and WXYZ are grouped, like on an old phone keypad). Personally I'd set ABC up first and then you can copy that action set when creating the others.

Whilst in the controller settings, press R1 to move across to the ABC action set, and then create a radial menu on the left trackpad. Within those settings, set the center button as changing the action set to default. Then add new buttons to trigger A, B and C. Under general settings, change button type to 'release', otherwise it can be quite easy to misinput when using the menus. Create the remaining action sets by copying ABC and change the buttons for the remaining letters.

Finally, create a touch menu on the default action set with buttons to change between the action sets. I also added buttons for tab, backspace and enter. As before, make sure it's set to 'release' activation rather than click.

I'm not sure how useful this will be to (if you want to type anything substantial, the regular keyboard does a good job) but it's cool to know that it's possible!

I might edit a few bits in my controller layout, then I'll export it in case anyone else wants to try this out.

Edit: Now uploaded to the community as 'Omega's layout' :)

Which modmanager should I use? I've seen that Vortex can be used but the majority of people I've seen don't like it. I'd like to mod Skyrim and Darkest Dungeon

I'm currently looking for another controller for the deck. Reddit threads and some articles usually mention Dualsense, Dualshock4, 8bitdo Ultimate and XBox controllers.

I want one with a trackpad this time because I miss it for point and click games and the PS controllers seem to be fitting, but I'd prefer the buttons to have ABXY, in the XBox ordering. Are there controllers where the trackpad has feedback like the deck has?

There are plenty offbrand controllers out there, are you using any of them and what's your experience with them?

I got the BT 8bitdo ult, some cheap Switch controller and 2 old Xbox "The Duke" so far, for references.

How do I uninstall the mGBA Appimage from Emudeck. Since Emudeck won't or has a bug which doesn't.

My steam deck stopped charging, bought a new charger to be safe but still no dice. Opened her up and reseated the battery then tried the charger again. There was a hissing sound so I immediately unplugged it. The port smelled like burning, but after removing the board, there are no visual signs of burnt components. I do have access to a hot air soldering station, but I'm not even sure if it's just the port that's damaged at this point. Anyone replaced the USB-C before? Anyone had to ship their deck to a repair center?

I think it feels even better than original. Soft smooth finish 😌

Ngl I like abxy buttons more on the original but these ones are also quite alright 👍

PS I didn't do the replacement myself 😅

Never realised that quite a few third party mods for the deck are available - such as a transparent chassis, colourful buttons, and even an aftermarket APU cooler.

Linus pretty much pimps the heck out of the refurbished deck in this video.

The main downsides shown (aside from the difficult chassis swap) were the aftermarket chassis joystick tolerances being a bit tight, and the new HD screen increasing system power consumption by at least 10W - while also bringing a noticeable performance penalty, with ~37 FPS on the HD screen vs 60 FPS on the standard deck screen when playing F1

What emulator do you use for GBA games? mGBA is a appimage if you download it from Emudeck but the flathub version isn't good in gaming mode? So what would you recommend instead?

Surprisingly easier than I thought.

After searching for a bit i find THIS article with all the announced sales dates. According to it there are still 3 main sale dates left:

  • Return of Steam Scream Fest (Halloween): October 26 - November 2 (additional details to come)
  • Autumn Sale: November 21 - 28 (major seasonal sale)
  • Winter Sale: December 21 - January 4, 2024 (major seasonal sale)

Anyone know if there are any concrete chance to have a discount on the console in these days?

I still have my original Xbox. I always liked the fat controllers, they're wired and plugged in with some xbox specific connector. I found some usb adapters online, has anyone tried to connect those to a steamdeck?
