When I watch some video with my docked steam deck on a screen, every 10 seconde, there is a glitch on the screen, is there a way to fix this ?

I have never used an HDR display before so I'm not sure how it's supposed to look.

I have been playing Spider-man both with and without HDR and unless I'm staring right into the sun there is literally no difference. I have always heard people talk about HDR as something incredible but I'm honestly disappointed.

I also played Tetris effect: connected and HDR seemed to just make all the menus darker, but the rest looked the same.

Have I done something wrong or is this how it is supposed to be?

TL;DR: watch the 2 minutes video for the fix.

Story time !

It's been a hot minute (~1year) since I needed/wanted to tinker with my Steam Deck. It's currently living its best life paired with the official dock as a desktop PC for my kid (e.g. YouTube and Roblox dedicated machine). So yeah, I went and forgot the sudo password I set back then, and I unhelpfully did not save it in Keepass or anything.

Today I put in the work to reset it... Here goes my journey.

  1. Try out every password variants of mine I can think of for 20 minutes. FAIL.
  2. Google it, stumble on some real stupid "solutions" promoted to the top of the results. FFS Google.
  3. Lots of YT videos seem to agree that recovery media is the way to go. Seems overkill. Cannot we get a root shell at startup or something ?
  4. Find an alternative method that looks suuuper risky (tinkers with the recovery partition) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYBpEysFMDM]. Nope not going to try that one.
  5. Go back to /r/SteamDeck (been a while) again the consensus is to use recovery media. Ok ok, recovery media it is !
  6. Follow instructions at https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/1B71-EDF2-EB6D-2BB3 and make a bootable USB drive. Easy Peasy.
  7. Muck about for a while with the dock's USB ports because the drive is too large or the ports are too close together. FFS Valve.
  8. Boot successfully on the recovery media, and start the 3 commands-long procedure.
sudo ~/tools/repair_device.sh chroot
rm -f /var/lib/overlays/etc/upper/passwd
rm -f /var/lib/overlays/etc/upper/shadow
  1. First command fails, which is a shame since the others cannot work if this one does not. Fuck.
  2. Back to googling and redditing (beggars can't be choosers). Find someone with a very similar error in a quite recent post. No answers though, except one by the OP himself who says he found a way AND DOCUMENTED IT. Thank you /u/TheArtfulAardvark for proper Internet etiquette. Obligatory XKCD curse avoided.
  3. Watch the 2 minutes-long video with cautious optimism. Does not seem too hard nor risky... To good to be true
  4. Perform the procedure, goes more or less exactly as described in the video (not exactly the same version of the boot menu, but same items).
  5. Fail to return to gaming mode with CTRL-ALT-F1 for some reason, so trigger a command line reboot.
  6. Check that the parameter added to GRUB was not saved (it was not).
  7. Return to desktop mode and finally set a new password with passwd. Exhales. Thanks for the video and instructions 10 Minute Steam Deck Gamer.

Hi there, I know this has been debated for a long time but just trying to understand if this level of backlight bleeding is normal. To add some context, this picture was taken in a dark room with the deck showing a completely black image. Thanks! steam deck picture in the dark

I was exploring the fps and refresh rate slider and I realized that when setting the framerate limiter to 25, the refresh rate was incorrectly set to 50Hz on the OLED version, when the 75 Hz setting would be a more appropriate setting, for the same reason 30 fps is at 90 Hz and not 60 Hz. Anyone else seeing the same behavior? Is there an explanation I'm missing here?

So, my setup is this:

  1. I have a steam deck connected to a Dell hub which is connected to a TV
  2. I have 4 8BitDo Ultimate C wireless controllers connected to the hub

This works fine when I am playing games installed via Steam, but when I am playing games added to steam via EmuDeck my experience is that most games won't register each controller separately, instead controller 1 will be used for all players.

It used to work, but then it just... didn't.

Anyone experience the same and figure out a way to fix it?

Between the recent Steam sale and all the good bundles lately, I'm interested to see what everyone's playing.

General

  • Fixed an issue where modifying settings in the desktop partition manager could prevent the SD card from being mounted and visible in Steam
  • Fixed an issue in desktop mode where dropping a folder on the desktop would erroneously create a shortcut for every item within the folder.

Graphics and Performance

  • Fixed the performance overlay displaying GPU clock speed as an instantaneous measurement rather than an average, resulting in misleading numbers.
    • This matches behavior of SteamOS 3.4.11
  • Fixed a problem with elevated noise levels for trackpad pressure sensors. Affects only certain configurations.
  • Fixed incorrect colors (gamma) when using Steam In-Home Streaming.
  • Fixed a rare system crash on game exit
  • Fixed an issue in certain HDR titles wherein wiggling the cursor on the same frame as closing the game would cause incorrect colors in subsequent game launches
  • Improved a situation where a game's frame presentation could block because of buffers submitted by Steam or other windows, removing a potential source of game stutters.
  • When the frame limiter or vsync is enabled, the performance overlay now shows frame timings based on when they are flipped to the display, rather than when the GPU rendering was completed. The GPU-based timings are still visible on level four setting.
  • Fixed an issue causing stutter in certain games that buffer multiple frames in advance.
  • Miscellaneous compositor performance improvements.

I have a quest 2, but when I look for steam link in steam, it just says to download the app from your favourite app store. There is no download link.

I can't seem to find it online anywhere.

I completely understand why Valve decided that the touchpad haptics were good enough, the deck is heavy as it is already. I'd still love to have the option of adding some proper rumble on the deck for the games that deserve it.

I apologize if this comes out weird, I've never crossposted from Kbin before. I hope it works.

~~Edit: It didn't. Link to the tutorial is in the title, sorry!~~
Edit 2: Maybe it did!

I’m playing Station to Station, Cyberpunk, and Miles Morales currently. I’ve noticed when I stream from my main rig to the Deck the colors are drastically different from both what the game looks like natively on the SD and my rig’s own monitor. I’m curious as to what gives, and how/where to fix it.

-PC has a RTX 3060, current WHQL drivers -Steam Deck OLED 512GB on Stable channel -Colors are tilted towards too much red, orange, and brown in all 3 games. But only while streaming, playing off the Deck natively it looks more…natural?

EDIT: Preview 3.5.8 contains a fix to the issue.

Fixed incorrect colors (gamma) when using Steam In-Home Streaming.

So, my personal experience of the installation is been a bit complicated by the tutorials i've find on YT. Basically I was stuck in the part where after the installation you need to change the directory (or add a new shortcut) for the launcher. Many video didn't explain that or use a previous version of the OS with slightly different interface. In the end i've found this great tutorial online and completed everything.

There is anything i should do (both on the device setting or in the Ubisoft setting) to improve the experience on my Steam Deck?

Btw. The download of the game (AC Origin) was superslow (9mb/s). Any way to fix that?

When I turn on my headphones, my oled deck turns on. Neat, but unwanted when I'm using my headphones for other things, like my zoom meeting for work causing Dave the Diver sounds to come out of my headphones. How can I turn that off without disabling Bluetooth every time I put the deck to sleep?

Does it work as one controller, two controllers or nothing recognised at all?

I am trying to get a pair of joycon/3rd-party for better posture. 3rd party seems to have better ergonomic designs. Any good advice on a controller?

I am aware of some discussions online where binbok may or may not work, which is a mix message. Just trying to see if there are new insights on what had been tested or any good recommendations

What could someone do to add their DRM free games and music to their steam deck and to steam so they could be enjoy there? Could they play their drm free games on the stream deck from humble bundle?

I don't get it but for some reason the 3d open world multiplayer shooter with vehicles and long view distances that runs the best on the steam deck (other than a very graphically simple game like battlebit) is DayZ. I obviously haven't tried every game out there though...

On the V++ deathmatch server (using steamdeck screen not higher resolution monitor) I can be in the middle of a firefight with 20+ people nearby and get a stable 50fps. For DayZ that is basically the most challenging it gets for game performance, in the normal game having 20+ people nearby has to be an extremely rare situation I imagine. Yeah you have to turn the graphics down but you really don't have to sacrifice view distance and the game looks fine on lower graphics. (Gun scopes are very important for playing on a low resolution screen like this though, dont bother playing on servers where gun scopes are extremely rare).

Unfortunately the game does crash randomly every once in awhile, I can't figure out why yet but I am playing on heavily modded servers and honestly the performance is SO MUCH better than any other open world multiplayer shooter like this that I don't really feel like I can even complain much.

Interestingly the engine DayZ was made off of, Arma 3, runs much worse. I guess you can get Arma 3 to play ok offline (it looks like crap after you turn everything down though) but in multiplayer forget it.

Give it a try! Yeah yeah... mouse and keyboard players are gods of aim blah blah blah, you can compete fine with joysticks + gyro if you take the time to get acclimated to it. Go play a deathmatch server an mess around until you feel comfortable.

I was playing around with AnyDesk on the Deck, getting some stuff, and I wanted to set the screen share resolution to fit my laptop screen (where I was streaming the screen to). I somehow managed to change the resolution to something really small, and no setting on AnyDesk could change it back.

I opened the menu but could not get to the settings, so I thought a restart should fix it. Of course, I lost connection to AnyDesk, and now, whenever I access the desktop mode, I am greeted by a blank screen after the splash screen. I suspect the desktop mode is still loaded, but as the screen resolution is messed up, nothing is shown on the screen.

Is there any way to change it back to the default?

Edit: Resolved. Solution in the comments

At launch, Steam Deck players made up 10% of the playerbase for The Pale Beyond. 9 months later after sales/etc that number has dropped to 5%.

Both numbers are significantly more than the steamOS user percentage (0.5%), so we can make the assumption that Steam Deck users make up a disproportionately high amount of games sales, and particularly full price sales for new releases.

I have got my OLED Steamdeck today and made a picture with my old one side by side. The display is a little bit bigger, the touch screen is way better (more like a smartphone).

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this I just figured maybe someone has experience with launching a non-steam game as a steam game through launch options.

I'm trying to play RuneLite through Old School RuneScape (number go up make feel goooood). My issue is that it loads for a second or two then closes...

What I've done:

  • Went into desktop mode and downloaded RuneLite.AppImage from RuneLite.net
  • Marked RuneLite.AppImage as an executable
  • Launched RuneLite and set setting according to Reddit user squeezeme_juiceme here (probably not relevant)
  • Closed RuneLite to save settings (also probably not relevant, just recanting my process)
  • Set my launch options as /home/deck/Downloads/RuneLite.AppImage ; killall -9 RuneLite.AppImage # %console%
  • cried because it's not working
