SteamOS or Nobara? (lemmy.world)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by SeekPie@lemmy.world to c/steamdeck@sopuli.xyz

Just got the Steam Deck and have everything set up, but I found out that Nobara has a Steam Deck version of their distro. My question is: is it worth switching to Nobara SteamDeck Version or stay on SteamOS? Are there any other big differences other than Arch vs Fedora? Also, does it use KDE?

Just to be clear, the game runs great with the DX11 on my Steam Deck Oled. The only downside is that i find out that you can actually enable HDR by following this guide and it works GREAT... until it doesn't. The guide itself work with no issue but to enable the hdr option I have to run the game with DX12, and dx12 ( tested with or without mods) cause some random drop to 1 fps in some point of the map, usually in the space between rooms. I tried both Proton Experimental, and GE Proton but the lags keep happening. Anyone have a fix to that?

I already have a steam deck. But, I am thinking of getting a PS5 for the games that can’t run on the deck or would be better played on a console. Is this a silly idea? Redundant? I would have a steam deck and a pS5.

I would need to get a tv/monitor to go with the console.

I’m not in a position to get a PC or build one, hence, the steam deck.

They feel really loose, rattly, and mushy. The X button gets stuck very frequently and I can't tell why. I suspect it's either that the button is hooking on the frame when fully pressed, or the membrane itself is sticky for some reason and reluctant to pop back out. The B button also makes me worry, but it hasn't gotten stuck yet.

I'm considering taking the deck apart to look at the buttons from the inside.

With that in mind:

  1. Do other people feel this way about their OLEDs? Is this an issue ore just how the deck is?
  2. If you've had this issue as well, how have you dealt with it?
  3. Are the LCD-model teardown tutorials still valid for OLED models?
  4. Do hardware mods exist on the market that might allow me to replace the current buttons with better ones, or possibly to convert to from membrane to dome switches?

Thanks to anyone willing to help.

So aside from Heroic and other NS launcher, at this point i already have installed the app of Epic, GoG and Ubisot correctly. I've also added some artwork with a Decky plugin. After that i've made some folder in my sd named [ launcher game sd] and both with EG and GoG i can find those folders in E:/ and install the game on the sd.

So far so good.

Now, if i try to add the file.exe of a game installed from Epic launcher to my steam library i can actually run the file as a NS game ( Cat quest - proton experimental) but the game don't have any savings. My question is, do I have to run the game from their Epic launcher or there's a way to have my NS games diectly in my library ??

2023 was a pretty amazing year for games, but I'm also interested to hear what didn't meet expectations or didn't run as well as you expected it to.

I've been playing a lot of Fallout 4 over the holidays. I started and finished the Nuka World DLC (killed all the baddies), made it to level 90, etc.

Today I was playing on my Deck as the battery got a little low (11%) so I saved my game, exited the game, and went to shut down.

As it was shutting down, the Deck displayed a message, something like "Syncing to Steam Cloud" as the logo was spinning.

A few hours later, on a full charge, I booted it back up, started Fallout 4 again and... some of my old saves are there, but only about 30% of them, and critically not the most recent ones.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is this a known issue? Can I fix it, or report it? I've basically lost interest in finishing the game now.

The Steam Deck OLED has had a bug with wifi 6, where higher wifi frequencies would crash the wifi chip requiring a reboot before WiFi would work again.

Specifically some RoG routers and Netgear routers seemed to be the most affected, requiring Steam Deck OLED users to use 2.4Ghz only or to disable WiFi 6 features (like 160mhz or "AX") to be able to use 5Ghz.

Thankfully this update seems to fix it, I was able to re-enable wifi 6 on my Netgear router and it's working great.

I suppose it could be a random hardware failure, but I literally touched nothing not listed in the iFixit SSD guide; the Start button itself (the three lines) isn't anywhere near there!

I've already tried moving back and forth in the beta & stable software channels to no effect.

Edit: it's technically the "menu" button, but I think it gets often confused with the button labeled with the word "Steam"

Hi guys,

did anybody try to switch from kde to a window manager like awesome/i3 on the steamdeck?

I never played around with imutable distros ... I guess this might block some tinkering

I installed Fedora on a external ssd connected to steam deck through a usb hub. Somehow it won't boot up after an automatic update and reboot. Error says something like "/dev/disk/by-uuid/****" does not exist, and my usb keyboard does not work at all. Turns out I've set USB dual role device to DRD and that confuses the kernel or the usb hub or the motherboard, or maybe all of them. Anyway, set it to XHCI and everything is fine again.

Just curious if anyone else has had issues with their track pads on the OLED models.

My left side touch pad doesn't "depress" down at all in the middle, and requires much more force around the sides to depress down and "click". If you go by the haptic pressure measurement, the right side will click at around 3,000 anywhere on the pad,, but the left side takes about 10,000 around the edges and never does in the middle.

PC/Linux/Steam Noob here. I just got a game from GOG and I’m seeing tutorials mention Heroic, Lutris, and Wine via ProtonUp-QT as methods to get non-Steam games installed and running on Deck. Which method would you consider the easiest and most reliable for content from GOG, Ubisoft, Epic, etc…

Follow up, here's what I did:

  1. Desktop Mode: I installed Heroic Launcher (it handily chose a location in my games folder), and added it to my steam library.
  2. Game Mode: I did the change artwork stuff for Heroic, booted it, signed in and all that jazz, then installed and launched the game (Lost Ruins).
  3. Desktop Mode: I navigated to the (Lost Ruins) game folder and found the "start.sh" file that boots the game, then added that one to steam.
  4. Game Mode: Did the change artwork stuff for the game itself, and now I can add game-specific settings for it.
  5. (Extra) I added a "Heroic Launcher" collection to store GOG & Epic content.

How would you rate the OLED deck? Did you keep your LCD deck? Have you noticed any of the smaller improvements like a more responsive touch screen? Has the battery life improvement been noticable?
