The developer of Duckstation announced he is dropping linux support.

https://old.reddit.com/r/emulation/comments/1mcsww7/duckstation_dev_announced_end_of_linux_support/

So now would be a good idea to backup the latest AppImage, flatpak, and source code just in case.

Commands:

mkdir ~/duckstation-backup

cd ~/duckstation-backup

#!/bin/sh
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/duckstation-x86_64.flatpak'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/DuckStation-x64.AppImage'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/DuckStation-x64-SSE2.AppImage'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/DuckStation-Mini-armhf.AppImage'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/DuckStation-Mini-arm64.AppImage'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/DuckStation-armhf.AppImage'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/DuckStation-arm64.AppImage'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/duckstation-aarch64.flatpak'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/archive/refs/tags/latest.tar.gz'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/duckstation-windows-x64-release.zip'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/duckstation-windows-x64-sse2-release.zip'
wget 'https://github.com/stenzek/duckstation/releases/download/latest/duckstation-windows-arm64-release.zip'

flatpak build-bundle /var/lib/flatpak/repo org.duckstation.DuckStation.LATEST_STABLE.flatpak org.duckstation.DuckStation stable

Flatpak manifest: wget 'https://raw.githubusercontent.com/stenzek/duckstation/355c17bde96c79ede9c2c61ec25b34626591e14f/scripts/packaging/flatpak/org.duckstation.DuckStation.yaml'

(backing up windows versions also just in case the linux version stops working at some point, unlikely anytime soon)

I’ve had quite a few consoles since I’ve started gaming. Started with Nintendo ds,3ds,wii and the switch 1. I went back and forth with PlayStation and Xbox for a while but only really played cod on those consoles. But even on my Nintendo consoles I’ve only beaten very few games I played through Metroid dread twice and the Metroid prime one remake once. I got my steam deck in May of this year as my introduction to pc gaming and have accumulated about an 95 game library but I constantly find myself staring games but never finishing them. I’ll jump into a game for a couple hours and enjoy my time then jump back in and all the sudden it feels like a chore. What motivates y’all to see a game all the way through to the end. Am I just cursed, lol

So, I’ve been a longtime FPS player on PC — mix of mouse+keyboard and sometimes controller. I recently got a Steam Deck (used, but in great condition) mainly for single-player games on the couch, but I started getting the itch to try out some FPS titles on it... and wow. I cannot aim to save my life.

I'm talking about massive over-aiming, whiffing easy shots, and just feeling like my thumbs are drunk. It's honestly made some games almost unplayable for me. I even swapped in some Hall Effect sticks, hoping they’d smooth things out a bit, but I still feel like I’m fighting the controls more than the enemies.

Anyone else in the same boat? Do you just get used to it over time? Are there specific sensitivity settings, stick zones, or Steam Input profiles that helped you transition better? I’d love to be able to chill on the couch and play something like Halo MP without being dead weight to my team.

Thanks in advance for any help!

You can add a nested desktop to steam as a non steam game and be able to access your full desktop from steamos without having to close your game. Usually when you go to the power menu then go to desktop it closes steamos and runs the desktop then when you switchback it closes desktop and opens steam os. This allows you to pause your game go library click on your nested desktop and have access to your full desktop without closing your game or restarting your session of steamos. And it couldn't be easier. In desktop mode under the start menu there is a folder called lost and found that has the nested desktop exe in it. Right click it choose add to steam as a non steam game. Call it what you want add artwork or don't. Open up steam once from desktop mode just to make sure it shows up in library. Then restart your deck and have access to desktop from steamos at anytime without a reboot. Here is an article including the steps I've outlined here. I can't believe I just heard about this recently.

This and protondb are two reasons I am thankful for the community around the deck.

Original Title: bought a used lcd 512 steam deck on friday from a pawn shop, installed some games, but previous owners had a root password. so i am doing an in menu factory reset. its been going for about an hour and is only 52% and the little timer is way off

i removed all the games the previous person had and i likely installed maybe 300GB worth of games my self, is the amount of data on this thing causing this process to go so slow?

is it normal to take this long? and the little eta timer keeping all over the place

im still in the learning and experimenting phase of this awesome unit, so i am ok with doing things wrong a few times, i even might install my 2TB nvme 2230 drive at some point in the next few days.

anyways i feel like im watching paint dry, might even go for a long walk, but i am getting anxious about this process taking hours.

I work in IT but know very little about linux, with windows it would take 20 minutes to wipe an ssd and install windows, get on the network and start updating drivers, but that is with bootable media, i suppose if you used a recovery partition and factory image it likely will be a lot longer. is that whats going on here some how?

So, for some games on Steam Deck that are CPU-bound, you can't get more than 40 fps. Biggest example I know of this is Elden Ring. However, did you know that you can crank up the graphics all the way and still get 30 fps instead? Also on 30 fps you can lower the TDP and save some battery as well.

However, to make 30 fps feel as smooth as it is on consoles, you need 2 things; stable frame timing, and motion blur. Both are kinda non-negotiable.

Some games run terribly when you lock fps using Gamescope, so you have to lock it in game, and sometimes you have to lock it in both Gamescope and in-game.. I had an example of Death Stranding, a game that can run at 45-60 fps on max settings, but I needed to save battery life so I did that and also locked TDP to 8W. Saves a lot of battery life.

And motion blur... Without it, games will look stuttery and choppy.. the frames are shown exactly as they are without any sort of filter blending them together, leading to a choppy appearance which is why people don't like 30 fps. But 30 fps was absolutely fine on console I remember playing PS4 on 30 fps and I didn't even notice. Everything was smooth and animations were clean. Also it's your only hope of running modern games on Steam Deck with any sort of decent graphical fidelity like Expedition 33 and Wokung, both UE5 games but better optimized than their peers.. but you can crank up the settings to medium-high with quality FSR and get a consistent and graphical impressive experience. But if you decide to go for 40 fps, you will have to turn down every single settings to achieve it and it won't look as good for a meagre 10 fps extra.

So my PC shat the bed, and while it's getting looked over I'm relying on my deck for gaming. But I needed a PC for web surfing and what not, so I popped my Deck into the official dock, connected my 2 monitors, mouse and keyboard and voila I have a full desktop experience.

I love my Deck...

I usually play a little then leave it on the dock for a while then go on with my day to later get the deck again for a little and the back on the dock. I'm doing this every day, is it bad for the battery? Should I turn it off instead of sleep mode?

Ok time to try Lutris. Download, doesnt work, "tinker", google things, alright Epic launcher launches. Download a game. Doesn't launch, google more things, "tinker". Still no.

I'm tired, boss, just let me game. I do not care to play around with the technical aspects of things so I guess it sucks to be me. Sorry for the rant, please resume your vacay pictures.
