Came across this article, and it's a very interesting take on how Star Trek has changed with the times, and how modern audiences seem to have a harder time trusting institutions or imagining Trek's utopia.

At turns fascinating, insightful, heartbreaking, heartwarming, infuriating and even savage, it's certainly the most interesting ST-themed interview I've ever watched / listened to.

For me, it also tied various ST lore and insider info together (thanks, Memory Alpha!), especially DC Fontana's book, which I recall as being pretty scathing when it came to Gene Roddenberry. But after watching this two-parter, I get the sense Gene's lawyer and the network itself had a pretty disastrous, and even cruel influence on the "Great Bird of the Galaxy."

Star Trek on Laserdisc

*Available in TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, and theatrical release flavors.

It's guaranteed very few Star Trek fans have ever seen these, they are as hard to find as it gets. What we have here is Star Trek on a fully analog video format that isn't plagued by digital artifacts found on streaming platforms and early DVD releases (such as the DS9/VOY releases), nor does it have any of the quality issues found with VHS tape.

The elephant in the room here is cost, so don't go searching Ebay/ZenMarket just yet. As with most analog hifi things, you have to spend a lot to get high quality results. Laserdisc is no exception, and it's even worse because of the rarity of the discs and the equipment all having antique status.

That being said, in my quest to transport myself back to the 1990's, I have amassed enough equipment and specialty gear to capture Laserdiscs in stupidly high quality, and have uploaded the results for normal people to see. Now the preferred way to watch these is in their native resolution with a high end LD player hooked directly to a retro Trinitron CRT or Plasma TV, but these direct disc captures will be the best possible viewing method on modern display devices.

The last thing the guy that dropped this beast off was “don’t forget to keep your hands clear, that’ll sew through your bones!”

I immediately named her Moopsy!

I'm curious about rehabilitation. I believe crime comes from access to resources and/or from a lack of emotional education (such as empathy, patience, and sympathy).

When I hear news stories of horrific crimes, I often start to wonder: what would have prevented it and how can we move on from it?

I don't believe in the death penalty and I don't believe in forced labor. I do believe "confinement" paired with education, food, comfort, and time to reflect is part of rehabilitation.

What does it look like in Star Trek? In other words, what does western culture see as the "epitome" of a rehabilitation center?

I understand what pon farr is, but where is the photo from? Which is the original? When was it taken and why? Is the original negative/print held by a particular organisation?

From StarTrek.com, an excerpt from an interview she gave to Star Trek magazine:

"By the end of the series, Kasidy marries Sisko and is pregnant with their child. Jerald called their relationship 'powerful.'"

'Sometimes too powerful,' she says, laughing. 'The chemistry between Avery and I was uncanny… It was magnetic, because you had two seasoned actors who were both aware of that and who were both happily married.' (Jerald has been married to Gralin Jerald since 1982. Brooks has been married to Vicki Bowen since 1976). 'We wanted to make sure none of that was residual outside of that stage. We didn’t do dressing room visits or anything. We were smart enough to know the chemistry was so strong not to go there and tease ourselves in that department. A lot of the strength you saw translated on screen was the fact we resisted one another, and I think that was a great dynamic of the characters.'"

Personally I have always felt like their relationship was so believable to the point where I would forget that the actors weren't romantically involved themselves. Sounds like it wasn't so far off!

I can't figure it out. It isn't huge, but it's heavy. Specs are 9 x 2 x 12 inches - ‎1.52 pounds. And it's totally smooth on the back. Nowhere to put a hook. Has anyone figured out a way to do it?

The picture is where I have it now. On the mantle, next to Robbie. But I have a giant Spock on my wall and I want it next to him.
