Stargate

No Spoilers Please

I made a post a few days ago generally talking about how much I like this series. I decided to make at a post at the end of each season to write about things I liked or didn't like.

Since I did not do this for Season 1 or 2, I will post more generally about them and focus on Season 3.

Up until now, I still think everything has been great. Most episodes are good and I can't think of a single one that I would not rewatch.

Season 1 The first episode was really hard for me to get into due to the drastic differences between the characters and their movie counterparts. I also had trouble due to how silly the snake head costumes looked. It made the show feel like Power Rangers. I am happy that they hardly make an appearance again. At least not so much in season 3.

I typically make myself watch 3 to 5 episodes of shows that are highly recommended before making my decision about them, but episode 3 was difficult for me to get into and I quit Stargate for a few years at this point.

This year, I have been picking up an interest in history, especially ancient history. I am not sure what it was, but I decided to watch episode 4 and it was about Minoan's. Wow! I literally just read about them and with that I was sucked into the show.

I also liked episode 9 where there is something that ages the population. I particularly like it when Daniel was talking about Linear A. This is what I was reading about when I read about the Minoans, and I was so psyched I knew what he was talking about.

Just going back through the season 1 episodes listed on Wikipedia are bringing back tons of memories and really shows how great season 1 was.

Season 2 The introduction of the Tok'ra was great. I enjoyed the episodes and I like that Carter's dad was saved and became a member. Any time I see him appear in an episode, I know it will be good.

I do not think I have as many memories of season 2. Maybe it was not as good as season 1 and 3. I still didn't see a bad episode in the list, just nothing extremely special. I liked the episode where Teal'c starts to turn into an insect, but I bet that is not a fan favorite.

Season 3 I think the world really opens up in this season.

• Episode 2 "Seth" was really fun to watch. It's fun to think about cult leaders being aliens.

• Episode 5 "Learning Curve" was a bit dark, but it showed the kids just being normal kids after they transferred their knowledge. That is fine, but the show built it up to seem like the kids were being harmed in some way. I think this could have been a great episode, if there was some tragedy.

• Episode 8 "Demons" When I saw that they were going to use Christian gods for this episode, I was curious how they were going to pull it off without offending people. I'm not religious in any way, but I was still interested. When the demon was the devil, I realized that this was the safe way to do it. I was only half paying attention to this episode, but I got the impression that they could have escaped a few times but kept making bad choices.

• Episode 9 "Rules of Engagement" This was fun to watch, but I thought it was strange that the recording of Apophis dying was just accepted so easily.

• Episode 14 "Foothold" I really liked this one. At first, I thought it was aliens, then I started to think, "Oh, Carter is just affected by the chemicals." I kind of wish that would have been the story, but I still enjoyed it.

• Episode 15 "Pretense" Finally, there was a legal episode like we occasionally get in Trek. I thought the Goa'uld's argument was pretty weak, but I guess their plan was to stall and attack anyway. I'm happy the Vox didn't stay passive the entire time. I was kind of hoping the Tollan's would give Earth one of those cannons. I know they do not share tech, but maybe it could be manned by a person from that world.

• Episode 16 "Ergo" This was just a silly episode, but it was really fun.

• Episode 17 "A Hundred Days" This episode must have won some awards, the acting was great and the story was a bit heartbreaking. There is really an emotional conflict that I think people can relate to when watching it.

• Episode 18 "Shades of Grey" It was a great plot, but it should have been a two part episode. It was all rushed and resolved too quickly.

• Episode 19 "New Ground" This is my favorite episode so far. What a great concept. The leader of their military unit refusing to believe the evidence and not face it due to his faith is, sadly, quite believable. This is another episode that I think deserves some awards. I wish there was more help from the second in command girl who seemed to be open minded. They took someone back with them and I haven't seen him again. I wonder if he will make another appearance.

Conclusion The last few episodes were good, but nothing I particularly want to write about. I am looking forward to starting season 4 tonight after I finish work. If there is something else you would like me to include in these write-ups, please let me know. I will try to do one at the end of each season.

I’ve been binge watching sg-1 on and off for the past couple months.

I really love this show, I don’t think there really has been a bad episode yet.

I’m near the end of season 3 and I already feel like I watch to rewatch the series.

I watched the original movie by chance a few years ago and had trouble getting into sg-1 because the characters looked and acted nothing like their movie counterparts. But, I think, in season 2 I learned that it’s actually a different Jack O’neil.

Anyway, I plan to watch everything in the proper order, so please no spoilers 🙏

My credentials are, I've watched all 3 series of Startgate, way to many times. For more than a year, I had PlutoTV just set to the StarGate channel. I also own the Blu-rays, but PlutoTV is convenient. And of course I've seen the OG movie several times (less then the SG-1 movies). But we will not speak of Stargate Origins...

I know some of these things aren't new. Some might be (the internet is vast... after all).

So, one thing I want to address actually "fixes" two things. For the Ancients, Furlings, and Goa'uld, fixing aesthetics and lore.

tl;dr The Ancients should have had a common Gothic aesthetic. The Furlings should be written back in and used to explain various aspects of the Goa'uld, and the Goa'uld should be way more fearsome (in the reboot).

In the show, I always hated how the Ancients were depicted. And it wasn't until recently that I finally figured out why. Nothing with the Ancients is aesthetically coherent. The various stargates we see, the various tech lying about, both old and new... none of it really lines up nicely. But it should have. Earth is covered with evidence of various aliens throughout the ages. Beyond the Asgard, Ancients, and Goa'uld, we know the Ohne were on Earth during the time of Babylon. Much of Earth's history and culture is derived from the various "gods" that we find out were various alien races.

So, lets fix the Ancients. Based on some tech we see, most notably the rings and DHD, the 'Repository of knowledge', and honestly Destiny, we get some ideas. So, Earthlings created castles, the whole gothic look... And I think, the Ancients' overall aesthetic should be closer to the Warhammer 40k Imperium (not exactly, but along those lines). Far more gothic. Their architect is big, bold, and intimidating. And we know humans didn't come up with it. In the episode 'The Torment of Tantalus' where we learn of the 4 races, we see... a castle. We can assume it predates humans and other than Ernest and SG-1, no human has ever set foot there. And based on what we know about Asgard and the Nox... that design must either be Furling or Ancient. And my next bit will describe why it's not Furling. But how we've seen the Ancients and their tech many times was just wrong. I believe, if Stargate got rebooted, if they stuck with a "gothic" design, things would line up better. We see castles in other worlds, too, like when SG-1 is tracking down Merlin (as well as many other examples).

So, a little setup for the next part. We know the Goa'uld are largely just scavengers. They're like the Borg of Stargate (assimilating technology and whatnot). And that would have been more true early on. The Goa'uld had a sort of symbiotic relationship with the Unas. We know the Unas are not a highly intelligent species as even today, they're still fairly basic (as in, despite all the time they still aren't in space). In the few times we've seen their homeworld, we see no technology. It wouldn't make sense that a lake snake-like parasite would just be swimming around thinking "Oh, if I get one of those Unas, I'm going to build me a spaceship!". I feel the Goa'uld when from 0 to 100 real fast as they are a real threat that several species have dedicated massive efforts to fight.

So if we extend that with what we know culters and whatnot were influenced by various "gods", we were told we "never saw the furlings"... I believe originally the Omeyocan (the Giant Aliens with the crystal skull), were the Furlings, but scripts as they are, that got changed. And the two names can co-exists because, as know, it stands to reason the Ancients weren't always called that. We see in the episode 'Crystal Skull', it has a giant pyramid, but not of Goa'uld design. I'm implying that the whole pyramid design and a good amount of tech was of Furling design, and it was stolen by the Goa'uld. We see in the episode 'Paradise Lost', the control panel has various shapes, including a pyramid, and it's specifically called out to be Furling. And in both episodes, 'Crystal Skull' and 'Paradise Lost', we see tech that allows for teleportation unlike anything the Asgard or Ancients used.

We also know, the Goa'uld would rather eliminate anyone they can't control. So it's very possible the "Giant Aliens" were physically incompatible with them. Hard to say. We know the Omeyocans were at war and were losing to the Goa'uld. So I think the pyramid ships and a bunch of Goa'uld tech are just Furling tech. And the "we've never seen the Furlings" still holds true as the "Giant Aliens" that we see could be a hologram or a form they currently are, or can take for humans.

And lastly, the Goa'uld in SG-1 are not as threatening or powerful as they should be. For that many species to be at war with them, they should be a bigger threat. I think if they reboot it, they should come to find out that killing Ra was a fluke. That they caught him off guard because he didn't predict Earth's military to show up. So he didn't have his normal fleet/guard/etc. and his guard was dropped. The fact that we got a nuke on his ship and blew him to hell.... pure luck. We did what the other System Lords couldn't do.

Well mister, in my culture I'd be well within my rights to kick your ass I tell you hwut.

About 3 years ago, I watched the stargate movie and really loved it. I immediately tried to watch sg1 but had a really hard time due to the characters being recast with actors who are significantly different than their movie counterparts.

Well, I guess enough time has passed and I got through the first 3ish episodes and have been hooked since then.

I just started season 2 this afternoon.

I was working while listening to music and when it switch to this song I got really really distracted by the sound effects. I'm sure I can hear the gate connecting, a staff opening and make a staff or zat firing

Good evening everyone.

For people whose mother tongue is not necessarily English, have you watched Stargate in its original version or in a version translated into your language? I watched SG-1 in French and I'm beginning to wonder whether it's better to watch in French or English. I think I've heard that some adaptations aren't very good. Do you have an opinion on this subject?

This episode is by far my favourite, but man does it hit me hard, loosing my intelligence like that is one of my worst fears, plus David Hewlett knocks it out the park.

Actually, I watched two episodes. Once I got past the cut-corners animation, bad character development, the writing and dialog was just the worst ever. I thought I would watch through all the episodes and then pass judgement, but I barely made it through the second episode when the thing hatched out of it's cocoon, can barely speak, doesn't know anything, and everyone is asking, "Are you an Ancient?" And in the middle of a fire-fight too. I had to turn it off at that point. I can't believe I watched it.

I never finished SGU back when I first got access to it. I've finished both SG-1 and Atlantis countless times. I remember watching most of the SGU pilot episode and quitting. I thought it was being too overly edgy and grimdark, trying to follow in the footsteps of the Battlestar Galactica reboot. I couldn't stand the idea of a Stargate show that was just characters being awful to each other.

Recently I tried giving it another shot and made it through the pilot episode. The characters are still abrasive to each other, but much less than I remembered, and they seem to for the most part mellow out a bit with each other as the episodes progress. I just finished the forth episode and I do want to continue. I am hoping they start actually doing something more than "the ship is falling apart we need to do something to fix it" plots, but I suppose the show really is trying to plant the setting.

No one ever asks me how I feel about the passing of the last Ba'al clone....

As shared by some of the authors of the books, it seems like something is holding up the release of more novels in the Fandemonium Stargate series.

Apparently there is at least one book that is finished and ready to go (and has been for a while now), but there is something preventing it from going ahead. I'm assuming it's some sort of licencing issue, especially considering that the fan game Stargate Network was C&Ded when Timekeepers got the go ahead. (Still yet to finish releasing a full game on that one.)

MGM still pulling the old move of sitting on the IP without doing much with it.
