Singapore's Monitoring Power Among the Reddit Community It's over 9000!

Browsing Reddit now and then one would come across the word discussions on how certain parties are just taking a non-action approach to certain agenda or issues. The term 'monitoring' is usually termed for these. Even in the official country's newspaper, the word 'monitoring' can be found more often than not.

I then thought of the idea to illustrate Singapore Reddit communities favorite word: monitoring

I gathered the posts and comments from Singapore and SingaporeRaw and did the analysis. Keywords chosen include the infamous, 'monitoring' and related words like 'monitor lizard', 'watching closely', etc.

Found that mentions of these words can be as low as 1000 and reach up to 12000+ in certain months.

Some months are very quiet and the more recent months(in 2025) leading up to Singapore's election, you can see the uptick of the occurrences of the words.

Looking at some of the text I've recorded, you would see some familiar copy pasta among others.

For fun, I put together a separate bar chart made up of emojis related to 'monitoring'.

Hmm, not quite accurate.

There, much better.

Prices are still dropping!  Checkout my new site with Singapore rental and property analysis and other stuff : https://clpcdxorvtvo.substack.com/

Read the previous part of this series at https://clpcdxorvtvo.substack.com/p/app-to-analyse-singapore-rentals

It's been a while since my last post on Singapore rentals analysis app. Last update showed proof of dropping rentals. In this update, I'll be showing more of it.

Before going into the analysis part, I've recently added price change updates to the 2nd data source - 9****        So out of 100000+ listings, there are 14000+ of them have updates to their prices. Hooray, price dropping! However, do take note that what I've noticed is that a number of these listings are just reusing the same listed post but with updated location and floor area among a few attributes besides the price change. Some are listings as far back as 2 years ago being updated. Meaning that the price change may just reflect that the listing itself has changed for a different unit.

Much larger pool of listings for rent

Looking at data from 2022 up to March 2025, you can see a significant uptick in listings around Q2 of 2024.      More options means more competition and thus lower prices.

More newer(?) listings since the last 3-4 months

Referring to rental source 9*****, I noted a large number of red/hotter markers on the far right of the graph.Thinking it was more newer units being listed for rental on the market, I looked them up. However, most of the listings are much older flats like this Ang Mo Kio one.

    And this Teck Whye one.

I can't say for sure, but it might be that the agents have an overwhelming number of listings to post and manage OR they are getting lazy to update them. That's all for this update. Let's continue to push for lower housing prices!  Welcome to share your feedback in the comments

Spotted an owl in the woods in Bishan Park in central Singapore early in the evening. Logically this makes it a spotted wood owl.

Sorry for the low quality - it was at the limits of my Pixel 6 camera.

Bicycles and kick scooters will be banned from footpaths that are next to cycling lanes from the fourth quarter of this year. They must stick to the cycling lane instead. Only personal mobility aids like motorised scooters will be allowed on these pedestrian-only paths. These will have a speed limit of 6 km/h by the end of next year. The Land Transport Authority says this is to keep paths safer for all, especially seniors and young children.

(Bloomberg) — Singapore’s new-home sales barely rose in June, capping the weakest first half in at least two decades as sentiment wanes in the once-booming market.

Developers sold 228 units last month, up from 221 in May, figures from the Urban Redevelopment Authority showed on Monday. That means fewer than 2,000 units were sold in the first six months of 2024, the least in available data going back to 2004, according to preliminary calculations by Bloomberg.

Initial home sales figures for the second quarter may be revised in finalised data released later this month.
