Palestinians are speaking out against the new prisoner execution law which passed the Israeli Knesset on Monday. Families rallied against the new law outside the International Committee of the Red Cross headquarters in Al-Bireh on Tuesday, holding up photos of their imprisoned sons. The legislation mandates “execution by hanging” for those found guilty of “terrorism”-related fatal attacks. Military courts, where these cases are tried, have a staggering 96% conviction rate. Protestors stated the law was nothing but “revenge” against the Palestinian people but vowed, “This law will not deter our people from resistance.”

Texas Rep. and House Budget Committee chair Jodey Arrington wants to further slash social welfare programs like Medicaid and SNAP in order to foot the bill for Trump’s Iran war. “Fraud” is often cited by Republicans as justification for slashing such programs, but data shows intentional fraud by participants is extremely rare: According to a 2023 USDA report, of 26,000 of SNAP applicants, only .1% were referred for administrative or criminal review, and undocumented immigrants have also never been eligible to receive SNAP as Republicans claim.

Israel has passed a law making the death penalty the default sentence for Palestinians convicted of killing Israelis in terrorism incidents. The legislation, devised by far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, will see prisoners sentenced within 90 days of arrest and executed within a further 90 days. MPs allied to Ben-Gvir wore noose-shaped pins on their lapels as they gathered in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, to vote through the legislation last night. The minister was filmed brandishing a bottle of champagne in Israeli parliament, in celebration of the bill passing. “From today, every terrorist will know, and the whole world will know, that whoever takes a life, the state of Israel will take their life,” Ben-Gvir told the Knesset. Only Palestinians are tried in military courts. Rights group B’Tselem says there is a near 100% conviction rate and confessions are sometimes extracted through torture.
