A new study finds that sex and environment, not just age, strongly influence hearing sensitivity in diverse human populations.

The massive changes in US research brought about by the new administration of President Donald Trump are causing many scientists in the country to rethink their lives and careers. More than 1,200 scientists who responded to a Nature poll — three-quarters of the total respondents — are considering leaving the United States following the disruptions prompted by Trump. Europe and Canada were among the top choices for relocation.

The trend was particularly pronounced among early-career researchers. Of the 690 postgraduate researchers who responded, 548 were considering leaving; 255 of 340 PhD students said the same.

Transgender people prescribed gender affirming hormones are at significantly lower risk of depression, a new study shows. The US researchers looked at nearly 3600 transgender and non-binary patients, finding that over fifteen percent had moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms. After two years of followup, those who were prescribed hormones had a significantly lower risk of depressive symptoms. The researchers suggest that this happens because of the physiological changes caused by hormones, as well as reductions in gender dysphoria leading to better social functioning.
