I have my eye on the Orange Pi 5 8GB as my first SBC to selfhost with. These would be the roles for the SBC:

  • Jellyfin with 4K
  • Some *arr services
  • Host own domain site
  • Pi-Hole
  • Google Photos alternative?
  • Probably more I guess
  • Be low-power consuming

What's your take on this? Is 8GB enough?

I have been having quite a lot of trouble with my T-Mobile business internet. I would like to set up a pi so that when it loses internet it sends an email, and another when internet is restored (I realize without net the outage email will not actually send, but if there is a time stamp I can at least present it to T-Mobile and say look this is a serious issue when my net is down more than it is up), and run an hourly speed test and email the results. For a novice is something like this feasible?

Technically both are RISC based but probably they are way different in implementation. I'm thinking about buying a RISC-V SBC, and I just want to be sure about compatiblity with running ARM based software.

I've got a portable monitor that only takes one single USB-C input. The Pi 4 can't deliver enough power to keep it on. The monitor power cycles endlessly when plugged into the pi.

Is there a way I could give it more power somehow?

Hello, I was working on making an Internet radio player thing with my Le Potato and I got stuck trying to get the IR receiver to work. My plan was to switch station using an IR remote and have the box be headless. My main question is does anyone know a working tutorial the IR receiver? I could not find one last time I checked.

Preferably with multiple SATA ports or an expansion slot that can take a PCIE card.

It's basically an OrangePi as far as origins go, but has the same form factor, and can be used in the same places where the Pi 4 Compute Module can.

They also sell these nice pads: https://biqu.equipment/collections/lcd/products/bigtreetech-pad-7 -- That basically take the CB1 (CM form factor) and integrate it into a display for 3D printing.

This all comes from my little corner of the SBC universe :)

I've left out the more well known boards (banana, orange, sipeed, etc) and tried to focus on the more obscure. Feel free to add your suggestions. I may make a wiki page soon.
