I learned this routine from my high school sax teacher Joe Bosoty. To this day it still serves to help me gain control over my sound when I have a few days to get in shape for a performance I want to sound my best on. Give it a try!

This was a fantastic discussion on the recently published practice notebooks of Michael Brecker! Rick Margitza, world renowned saxophonist and Brecker transcriber, is joined us from Paris. David Demsey is joined us from the Michael Brecker Collection at William Paterson University with Brecker's original notebooks in hand. We also had Adam Niewood, who worked on Brecker's mouthpieces inluding the one he used on his final recording. Luis Palacios, who completed his dissertation on Brecker's playing and is Director of Instrumental Performance and Jazz Studies at Northwest Nazarene University, and Chuck Sher and Larry Dunlap from the publisher Sher Music Co. are joined the discussion as well. We covered the system that Brecker used to practice the material in his notebooks, originally created by Gary Campbell, how he used that system not only in practice but in his improvisation, and many other important and interesting topics.

Join us for a very special Jazz Speaks event as Jazz St. Louis President and CEO Victor Goines interviews David Sanborn! We’ll hear Sanborn’s perspective on the rich cultural and societal elements of the St. Louis jazz scene of the mid-20th century and how those elements informed his development as a musician. There will be a Q&A opportunity for the audience following the interview. An all-star band led by bassist Bob DeBoo will then perform the music associated with Gaslight Square and the St. Louis jazz community.

The Whitaker Jazz Speaks Series is made possible with support from the Whitaker Foundation

We're celebrating our upcoming West Coast US tour with this cover of the classic Jackson 5 song "I Want You Back". Fun fact: this was one of the first songs we ever learned as a band back in high school (15+ years ago) and it's still a song we play in our shows to this day! Hope you enjoy and let us know what other covers you'd like to hear us try out.

Perry is BACK and he's unboxing the brand new Selmer Signature Alto Saxophone from Henri Selmer Paris. Will he like it?! Let's find out!

The Signature alto embodies the renewal of the Super Action 80 Series II model, which has marked the history of the saxophone since its launch in 1986. While retaining the sound characteristics of the Series II, it offers improved intonation, especially in the upper register, and favors emission in the lower register.

Its ergonomics, also inspired by the Series II to respond to the needs of all musicians, benefits from the latest innovations, updated for the Supreme: a new 3-point neck receiver system for better sound homogeneity, a nickel-silver tightening ring for greater density in this sensitive zone, an octave key with Teflon supports for more mechanical fluidity, etc.

Embellished with original engraving in the Art Deco style, paying homage to the age-old techniques handed down through generations of artisans at the SELMER factory in Mantes-la- Ville since 1919, the Signature alto is both a traditional saxophone and a beacon of modernity.

Perry is BACK and he's unboxing the brand new Selmer Signature Tenor Saxophone from Henri Selmer Paris. Will he like it?! Let's find out!

The tenor Signature is a reinvention of the Series III model, which has been a favorite of numerous saxophonists for its acoustic qualities and its ergonomic comfort since its launch in 1995. With an increase in the diameter of the neck receiver, this new model offers rare precision and a full sound. Strongly inspired by the Series III, its ergonomics is suitable for all musicians, regardless of their ability level and musical genre. Equipped with a new neck receiver system with three-point tightening developed for the Supreme model, the tenor Signature ensures perfect homogeneity of sound. A saxophone that is at once traditional and a beacon of modernity, the tenor Signature is embellished with original engraving in the Art Deco style, paying homage to the age-old techniques handed down through generations of artisans at the SELMER factory in Mantes-la- Ville since 1919. This unique place emanates power and magic; craftsmanship is omnipresent and fundamental, and human hands create the sound.
