On a semi-related note, anyone found a good MC Lemmy community?

Running power delete suite as we speak editing all my comments for a final hoorah! I'll keep the account exclusively to make sure nothing gets restored by reddit. Looking forward to seeing what this CEO proof federation becomes! :)

From the Moderators:

Hi everyone,

The subreddit will be reopening on Monday 19th June, however there will be substantial rule changes. Reddit has made it abundantly clear that users, not moderators, are the true community leaders and owners of their respective subreddits. So, therefore, we will be changing the community rules to reflect this stance.

Going forward, the only subreddit specific rule is that any content you submit to r/iOS must be something you consider to be iOS related. That's it. It is what the users determine to be 'iOS' content, not us 'landlords' or 'landed gentry' - as spez would say.

Please be aware that the site-wide Reddit rules are still in place, and something we, and Reddit's Anti-Evil operations (AEO) will continue to enforce. For more detail on this, please read Reddit's content policy here.

To sum this up:

No harassment / bullying Respect privacy of others No sexual content of minors No impersonating in a misleading/deceptive manner. Label content correctly (NSFW or not?) No illegal content Do not break/interfere with the website

Reddit enforces these rules and we will be reporting users who break any of those rules to Reddit's AEO team, we encourage every user to report any content that breaks site-wide rules directly to Reddit as well.

You will be banned from this subreddit if you break any of Reddits site-wide rules.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments below. We will be updating our rule-set to reflect these changes.

For those not aware of the ongoing issues with the reddit admins, and would like to know what the hell is going on, please see the below links to get you up to speed.

Well, maybe "we" don't, but I would like one. We have Friendface for Facebook, Birdsite* for Twitter, what can we call Reddit?

Edit: kanamit seems like a good pick.

*among others. My personal favourite is Daddy Elon's Hellscape.

Looking at a company's career page can really reveal its long-term strategy. In this case, Reddit wants to leverage the extraction of wealth generated by its users. This career page caught my eye:

Ads prediction team is the central team to handle machine learning needs in the ads delivery pipeline. Some examples projects that the team own:

  • Improve our model through systematic model architecture engineering work including exploring different deep neural network architectures
  • Systematic feature engineering work to build power features from Reddit’s data with aggregation, embedding, content understanding techniques
  • Developing highly efficient retrieval ranking models with good balance between model performance and computation efficiency

As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer in the ads prediction team, you will research, formulate and execute on our mission to deliver the right ad to the right user under the right context with data and ML driven solutions. Source: https://boards.greenhouse.io/reddit/jobs/4820729

I think Reddit will go through with their API plans no matter what. They want to eliminate all third party apps so that their machine learning algorithm can target appropriate ads to users. They can only do that if users only use their app.

Please, people. Be reasonable and considerate of Reddit's need to make money. It is, afterall, spez's main focus.

315

Sadly, the poll was almost perfectly tied, so the political content can also stay.

316

Still, with a chunk of Reddit shut down, there’s no initial public offering. So if Huffman really wants to go public, he will need to find a way to align moderators and investors. One option would be to pay mods, or – if they don’t want to become de-facto employees – reward them in other ways. For example, he has pledged to develop new tools to replace the beloved apps. Either path involves higher costs, and a more tortuous path to profitability.

In short, the mods have shown that Reddit needs a business-model tweak. And potential investors will want to see it in action before shelling out for the shares, which makes a rushed IPO seem unwise. The self-branded “front page of the internet” has been waiting to IPO since 2021; it may have to moderate its expectations again.

So, /r/memes did a poll. The exact numbers happen to be multiples of 10%, but ignore that.

  • 10% of users want the blackout to continue
  • 10% of users want the subreddit to open back up as normal
  • 80% of users want the subreddit to only allow Medieval / Landed Gentry themed memes.

Henceforth: "The title of the posts must include either of the words 'Medieval', 'Landed' or 'Gentry', and the meme must include medieval content/images, or include content that features text about Landed Gentry."

Hear ye, hear ye, the people hath spoken.

Jack said twitter should have never been a company but thats even more true for reddit who's whole businesses model is based on unpaid volunteers lemmy is what reddit should have always been community owned and community supported and open source

Use a libreddit mirror like https://reddit.adminforge.de to link to Reddit threads so that Reddit gets 0 traffic and 0 ad revenue from us opening the thread.

For example, if the Reddit link is:

https://old.reddit.com/r/aww/comments/14clza9/i_present_to_you_john_blobiver/

Then you simply have to replace old.reddit.com by reddit.adminforge.de so that the link becomes:

https://reddit.adminforge.de/r/aww/comments/14clza9/i_present_to_you_john_blobiver/

If you go to Reddit, you will still see their ads, be they obvious or hidden through disguising as user interaction (bots are more or less obvious, AI is at the stage where they can fake users). You drive engagement and site traffic. The only way to do anything disadvantegous to Reddit is to stop going to Reddit (if you also delete all your content they have less things to put inbetween ads for the remaining users). You are the product they offer to advertisers, be it through being the buyer for advertised things or providing content to put between the ads so the users who may buy those things don't only see ads. Your enjoyment of the platform is largely if not completely irrelevant from the corporate standpoint. If anything, your disgruntlement can make you engage more providing them with more content to put between ads.

I have been lurking on Reddit for 5 years with only one follower. In last 5 days, I got 6 followers out of nowhere. Do anyone living same thing? Could Reddit have fallen that far? Also, when I look at my follower list, I still have that one loyal follower.

I hope I'm not doing conspiracy theory.
