I was testing if i could check on older threads on reddit through google-cache, while my DNS is blocking reddit.com completely.

What i noticed is that google has been caching the new version of reddit and it behaves really badly on the cached version. Wayback machine is also as bad.

I installed the Web archives addon for firefox and tried the bing version, it was near perfect.

Is there any non reddit link to the communities joining the blackout?

I'm going to delete my Reddit account today, I was wondering if it was a way to delete all my messages at once.

Some of my favorite subs have started going private already. I moved RiF out of the tray and replaced it with Jerboa.

I started my aggregated news with slashdot and fark. Moved to Digg after Kevin Rose announced it on TTV. went to Reddit at digg v2 because Reddit looked like diggv1. Went to rif when mobile usage passed my computer usage, now I'm here!

What's your story?

“We’ve known for over a decade that people come to Reddit to talk about the products they love – take r/BuyItForLife for example, a community of over 1.5 million redditors who have been sharing recommendations and advice about their lifelong, must-have purchases since 2011. These updates will uplevel the search-and-discover experience for both brands and our users by tapping into our differentiated value as a hub for actionable conversation”

When coming from reddit, one has a list of subreddits and is probably looking for similar communities. Could we help that search somehow? It is harder than on reddit because matching communities are distributed across multiple instances.

Would it make sense to maintain an awesome list? Or a separate community "looking for community"?

Shredded Account (sh.itjust.works)

Currently shredding my 11 year account with 32k comment karma. It feels pretty good, to be honest.

I have shreddit running, and I'm refreshing my profile on RiF. I'm watching the most recent comment getting further and further in the past, and deleting manually any post I see.

As soon as that's all done, deleting the account.

Obviously they needed one app to be saved to tell people "see, just work with us and you can keep operating". But is there a reason behind choosing that specific app, or did they just take a random one?

A lot of Reddit will go dark soon in protest of API changes

r/unexpected goes dark (reddark.untone.uk)

First subreddit over 10M to go private. The message shown when trying to enter the sub is a quote from spez:

I think the problem Digg had is that it was a company that was built to be a company, and you could feel it in the product. The way you could criticize Reddit is that we weren't a company – we were all heart and no head for a long time. So I think it'd be really hard for me and for the team to kill Reddit in that way. Exactly as the title says, do you guys think Reddit will buckle and at least be more reasonable or maybe even reverse their current decisions?

Edit: if not lemmy to the moon 🚀

When reddit goes dark on Monday, there will be a horde of people looking for an alternative. When the APIs go dark at the end of the month, another horde will come. When /u/spez says just about anything, it'll happen again. What can we do to prep here for that? How can we attract good moderators to moderate communities here?

Just listing things I noticed from the twitter/mastodon migration:

  • Mastodon had a few thousand signups per hour during the peak times.
  • Having a single instance (or even a small number) really simplifies the signup process. How can we scale lemmy.ml and other big instances now to prep for Monday?
  • I'm seeing communities already pop up (/c/earthporn, /c/photography and my favorite /c/jeep). If we can keep content flowing through some of the big communities, it'll help people come back on Tuesday. (On a Sunday night at 7pm MDT, the backend on lemmy.ml is getting crushed and posting is haphazardly working for me...)
  • A good intro doc would help folks get up to speed faster (this is how lemmy/fediverse works, he's a list of mobile apps you can use, here's how to sign up on patreon... etc).

Scaling lemmy.ml, beehaw.org, and lemmy.one (those are the ones mentioned in the pinned post for "joining") is probably the biggest priority. If owners of these instances need money to pay for server fees, expertise with server migrations, deployments, scaling, dev work, etc, they really need to communicate.

The proverbial "call to arms" would be appropriate.

We've got lots of super nerdy folks here that can donate time/money. Personally, I'm not sure how I can help right now. (Currently subbed on Patreon, but that's it).

Not my site, but pretty interesting!

Originally, the protest was planned to be 48 hours. However, after a shambolic AMA held by Reddit's CEO, it has become clear to us that Reddit doesn't intend to act in good faith. When the CEO is willing to lie and spread libellous claims about another third-party developer, and then try double down by vilifying them, again, in an AMA, despite being proven as a liar by the developer through audio recordings, that's when we knew what we were up against. Therefore, the subreddit will be privatised until such time as a reasonable resolution is proposed.

During WAN Show on Friday, Linus called Reddit leadership "big liars". He also noted the recent instability in internet services, while also noting that people still have twitter and Facebook accounts despite recent backlash.

On the current situation, Linus added "Reddit is not unassailable. Guys, we don't actually have to accept this. And I feel like this period has resulted in complacency from these platforms as well where they're just blatantly anti-users to the point where they must just think 'You have no other choice'. Guest what? Linus Tech Tips dot com still exists. If you wanna go to a forum and talk about stuff, you can. Fucking do it!"

Think this case in particular is pretty interesting. Former default subreddit and one of the largest on the site (Top 20 at least).

I think /r/videos is where we'll see how things actually play out with the reddit admins. I'm guessing at some point the admins will step in and replace the mods.
