What has Kesha been up to over the last few years? That's a name I haven't heard in a while

i was reminded that 'million dollar baby' bears a dianne warren writing credit just for interpolating a few notes from the hook of 'can't fight the moonlight'.

that led to looking at neighbor listens, where someone just listened to rihanna's 'bitch better have my money'. which i remember as a rap song from practically before she was born.

looked it up on musicbrainz and it's a different song, and with her having a writing credit: as robyn fenty, which i now remember as her real name. i think she uses variations of this on some merch lines.

sting as gordon sumner made sense, who wants to be a rock star called gordon, although 'gordon sumner for jaguar' makes more sense than sting.

any funny or favourite stage names out there?

Wow 110 subscribers! Coming from checks notes zero 2 weeks ago this is pretty startling for me. Welcome all, thanks for being here!

Just a few notes for folks here. My name is scrubbles, I'm the admin and I run the instance we're all sitting on. I'm so happy to run this for everyone, after the fallout with Reddit I've decided that I'm not going back. My time here on Lemmy has been better for my mental health, I feel like content is fun again. That's my way of saying I'm in it for the long haul, we're here to stay!

Now onto new business

Reporting

Lemmy and the fediverse is seeing huge migrations in people. New folks are coming in every day, with that there will be some people that aren't as kind as we've seen so far. Please feel free to hit the report button if something doesn't feel right. Even if they aren't breaking an explicit rule, let the mods know. We don't have a full set of rules yet after all, maybe we need a new one.

Calling all mods

Now that we've broken 100 subscribers, I'd like to officially extend an invite for volunteer mods. Previously it was just me in ~~an attempt to retain absolute power~~ kidding folks I didn't want to run this place with a thousand rules and guidelines right off the bat. However now that we're crossing 100 I don't think I should be the only person running the show here. If anyone would like to step up they are honestly very welcome to do so, just DM me and we'll get you started. Running the instance will be a job for me alone, I'll need additional people to help run individual communities. They'd be given a pretty wide latitude to run the communities how they want, (obviously within reason). They'd could even start running some fun things like...

Ask not what the sub can do for you

Or do, really. What things do you wish we were doing? Should we do daily threads? Should we do weekly "what am I listening to" threads? I've been throwing up random articles I find along the way, but I'm sure that's getting boring. Pitch ideas, what have you liked in other places?

Community creation is open

You can create communities here! I haven't because 1) I'm not sure what people want to see and 2) I'm going to need some help modding more communities. So, if you feel like you want to mod a community and create it, just ask. I'm happy to create any and ~~all~~ most communities (they're are already some NSFW communities here on Lemmy around popstars...) you will be given full domain of those communities.

Is it time we set up a Carly Rae Jepsen one? Someone ping me and I'll get it going for you! (....aaaand it's done already, what other ones do we need?)

In addition I'm open to mods for the TaylorSwift community and we have a new CircleJerk community that someone was going to run, but they haven't responded to me in a couple days now...

Don't be a lurker!

It's very easy to be a lurker here, god knows I was for years, but as we're getting started don't be afraid to post. Whatever news, excitement, theories, pictures, whatever feel free to post! I promise you people have been much nicer here than other places.

Concerns or criticisms?

I'm new at this, so please I want to make a good community for you all. If you have anything you don't like, you can call it out in comments or in a private message. All I ask is you follow some great advice one of my managers gave me, "Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions." If there are problems, give me some ways I could fix the problem and I'll absolutely do my best.

Again, welcome, and happy to have you!

I've made a popheadscirclejerk community and would love some help getting it started :)

i've read anecdotes that the ideal length for a short-attention-span pop song has steadily drifted down. just a few years ago songs shorter than 3:00 were really rare, and now they're more common than not. i'm looking at an ava max album (which i adore) where 3:30 would look like an interminable grateful dead jam.

it's said that this has to do with streaming but i don't quite get the connection, anyone care to educate me?

speaking of killer song placement.

also, i have a playlist that ends with:

  • sabrina carpenter - shadows
  • nirvana - come as you are
  • no doubt - just a girl
  • jay-z/linkin park: numb/encore

the core couplet from captain marvel sandwiched by stuff that just sounded appropriate

tangentially - i am the only person you will ever know for whom brie larson and john coltrane are adjacent in all-time listening charts

Dua Lipa’s “Levitating,” for example, which was 2021’s most-streamed song in the U.S., according to MRC Data, earned her, its songwriters and its various rights holders about $4 million, Billboard estimates.

per their chart, creatives (artist, performers, writers) split about a quarter of the money. publishers and labels get the lion's share.

three videos changed what i thought was possible: take on me, dire straits' money for nothing, and peter gabriel's sledgehammer. but take on me is the one i always think of first

the few people for whom 'max martin' is a recognizable name probably associate him with britney or the backstreet boys, millennial teen pop. and they're not wrong. but the story keeps going. kelly clarkson. katy perry. taylor's 'we are never ever getting back together', '22', 'shake it off'. ariana grande. the weeknd. 'cool for the summer.' 'love me like you do.'

when a cash register rings in a pop music shop, someone is handing him money.

this 2015 new yorker article is by the author of a book 'the song machine', which i've read and recommend to anyone in this community.

This instance is only 8 days old and we've already crossed 50 subscribers! Thanks everyone for being here.

So everyone knows, there are only a couple hard rules and they are pretty much just around don't be a jerk. This isn't Reddit, let your opinions and thoughts soar, I'm excited to hear what you all have to say about your favorite music.

We only have a couple basic rules for now (unless people prove we need more, but so far everyone has been really chill) Rules

  • As stated, no hate speech, no NSFW.
  • General “Don’t be a dick” rules apply

Don't forget to check out the other communities, TaylorSwift and our new one, Baby one more meme!

Welcome all!

P.S. don't forget, we can create other communities too. I've kept it pretty small so we don't fracture out too much, but if you think we need a CamilaCabello community, you just let me know and it'll be done :)
